Not very knowledgable with this but I can't get any sound in the CS menu, or game itself. Running it on Windows XP Home Edition, and all my other games work fine. There is nothing in the game options menu that has helped this problem, and I haven't found much that helps on the web.
My first question is, are you using Mac OS X or Linux? If Linux, which sound driver (ALSA, OSS, ESD, etc.)?
Does sound work with programs which are native to the platform?
I too started experiencing this. Previously CS:S with CrossOver 6.1.0 (Wine 0.9.38?) - worked fine with OSS. Has anyone looked at the new Steam update? Looks like a lot has changed - with options to alert the user for updates/messages/etc. When I run steam, 'lsof' reports steam.exe accessing /dev/dsp. Could this be "blocking" CS:S sound output?
I believe it is the latest steam update that is causing this. Steam now blocks directsound by using it itself.
As a workaround, you can start winecfg in the bottle, select 'steam.exe', go to 'libraries', add wineoss.drv, then click 'edit' and set the load order to disabled. It will warn that changing load order isn't recommended, but it can be ignored. We're sorry for the hassle it causes.
Just disable OSS and use Advanced linux sound architecture ..(ALSA)
