high latency

im running css on my mac 2ghz duo, 2 gig ram
and i get really high latency on servers when i pull up the list, 100-300 and when i try to join the lower numbered ones it brings up the screen when a game is full but only displays the server name and a latency of 2000.
thanks for any help
