White screen on startup

Specs: Intel Core 2 Due @ 2.16Ghz
4mb cache per processor
2 gb ram

NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
PCIe
128mb Vram

OK, Steam installed fine, i downloaded Counterstrike Source Fine, everything fine.

When it loads up, for a split second i see the default picture of the counter terrorists with the 'loading' on the bottom left. THEN, a White screen, i believe the game is fully loaded but this white screen ruins it. I can still see the mouse, and if i press [APPLE] [ALT] [ESC] crossover shuts down (including the game).

I really dont know what to do, when i load steam it sais i should update my graphics card, is that normal then?

Thanks a lot for any help.

Right, i applied the console tributes givin in the tips area.

This got the menu going, but not full screen. Im just connecting to a game now...

Found servers fast... Fast connection... downloading .mp3 files really fast! (multikill etc...)

all lookin good... no lag...but doesnt matter as its just the menu. I turned all graphics low:
Model: Medium (recommended High)
Texture: Meduim (Rec. High)
Triliniar
Lowest shadows/water
800x600 res

Wow!! all good... hardly any lag... for that reason ive turned it all to low. ( i aint playing the game for graphics atm)

Tell me if theres a fix for full screen please.

Alright! GREAT NEWS FOR 24" MAC USERS

Im running at:

1920 x 1179 Widescreen 16:10 Windowed

Model Detail: High
Texture Detail: High
Shader Detail: Low
Water: Simple
Shadow: low
Antialiasing mode: off
High dynamic range: off
Filtering: Bilinear
Vertical sync: off

I did the stress test on these settings and got 43fps... thats good right??

I noticed the game really went A LOT better when i changed it from TRILINIAR to BILINIAR.

It runs great and i play it forgeting im on a mac! IT looks like full screen coz it takes up pretty much the whole screen. Im ok with it.

IM just giving feedback that crossover REALLY DOES WORK! Its great!

Glad you got it working. Strange that full screen is not working for you. I've had no issues with full screen on my MacBook as long as I set the dock to hidden.

It is possible you have found a bug with a resolution that is just too big for the available texture memory (just a wild guess as I've never ran higher than 1680x1050). You can try this as well if you have the 256 meg nVidia 7600 GT card in your iMac.

  1. From CrossOver, click Programs > Run Command...
  2. Then choose the bottle you have Steam installed in (usually win2000).
  3. type: 'regedit' into the command box
  4. click run
  5. browse to: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Wine > Direct3D" in regedit
  6. double click VideoMemorySize and change the value to 256
  7. click ok
  8. exit regedit

We default to 128, so if you have the 7300 card, then you don't need to change this value.
EDIT: nevermind, I see you have the 7300 card listed above. This post might help users who have the 256 meg card though.

Well ive hoped ive helped, Im amazed it runs SO WELL on such a high res!!

49fps isnt bad at all is it?

I'd really be up for helping you guys run games on a 1900x1200 screen! just get back to me!

Now that i got CS:S working, my life is over, thanks a lot for such an awful programme!

;)

Anything above 30 FPS is very playable IMO. The goal that most gamers shoot for is 60 FPS. Many feel that anything above 60 is just not noticeable. If you want more FPS, feel free to drop the resolution down a bit. I tend to prefer 1280x800, that is still high def (> 720p).

Lowerimg the resolutions is definitly a good way to improve the performance on macs. At least on my ati mac, not sure about nvidia, but the gf 7300 cards aren't high end really. On my gf7600 Linux machine I get absolutely no difference between 640x480 and 1280x1024, but on my iMac there is a huge difference between 640x480 and 1400x900. Windows users very often play at 800x600 or 1024x768. I have never seen a windows user play at 1900x1200(well, pcs don't have monitors doing that in general). 640x480 on the other hand is just too small, IMHO.

Usually you constantly need more than 40 fps for a first person shooter. The stress test doesn't really match the usual usage patterns of real css maps(they hardly draw water, monitors and transparent objects, but much more players). To get a more meaningful information you can record your own timedemos. Read the hl2 docs how to do that.

The reason why players often want very high framerates(up to 200 fps and more) is that in bad situations the framerate can drop down very badly(like 1/5th of the average performance). Having a high base performance ensures that the drops don't go below 30-40 fps. Of course there is a big coolness factor of insanely high framerates too. And it depends on personal habits too, someone who is used to not-so-high framerates can live with an occasional drop to 20 fps too. And I think no one gets an average of 200 fps in counter-strike source on affordable computers. On my Linux computer(gf7600, amd athon 64 3800+, 2gb ram) I get ~100 fps in the stress test if I set the shader detail to low or hack out the transparency of the panels. Some benchmarks done by a wine user show that Wine gets about 70% of Windows' performance on exactly the same hardware in the css stress test(Given that the drivers are ok, which mainly means Linux+Nvidia combinations). I want to improve this, but I think its not something we have to be ashamed of 😊

Just so you know, i get the same speed from 1900x1200 thn 800x600... i heard along the lines that CS:s depends near purely on CPU?
