Source running on lowest settings, still lag spikes

I have been running CS:S on my macbook pro 2.16ghz with 1g of ram and the x1600 vid card and am still encountering a lot of lag under lowest res/settings. I was wondering if you could clarify how "You can create a file named "autoexec.cfg", located in /Program Files/Steam/Steamapps//counter-strike source/cstrike/cfg" in Crossover and also would appreciate any other ideas and tips for getting Source to run smoothly.

I've had the best luck simply setting -dxlevel 70 on the launch options. See the "Known Issues" page for help on that.

The default detected dxlevel 80 is just not ready for prime time in 6.0 on the Mac. We have fixed a ton of issues and even more are being worked on for 6.1. Once that ships you should be able to run the game without tweaks on that hardware. I wish I had an ETA on 6.1 but I do not at this time. Just that we hope to ship sometime this spring.

I wrote down the tip about the autoexec.cfg file.
It's very simple : at the start of the game, CS:S check if autoexec.cfg is present or not.
If it is, then it executes the commands that are inside this file.

This file contains parameters that you can adjust, to disable graphic "eye-candy", in the benefit of getting more fps.
You should read the file (each graphic parameter is on single line, a comment being made after the double-slash sign. i.e. //)
For creating the file, simply paste the text of the "tips & tricks" section, and, when saving the file (use any word processor that suits you), specify that it is a text-file, name it "autoexec.cfg" and locate it in the right directory.

Hope this helps, and, if not, post back here.

Cheers
