Return (Enter) Key doesn't work in game...

I don't know why that is.

The Backspace doesn't work either.
Sending text messages is extremely hard as I have to use my mouse to hit send.

I've tried playing the game both in windowed and fullscreen mode.
Either ways it gives me the same problem.

My Specifications:

24" Aluminium iMac
2.8 GHz Intel Extreme Core Duo
2 GB RAM
ATI 2600HD PRO - 256 MB
Crossover Games - 7.1.1
Renegade 1.037 (Installed from the original two disc set. But I don't know why that should make a difference... it's the exact same game that's in The First Decade...)

What keyboard layout do you use? To find out, you can go to the Input Menu tab of the International pane of System Preferences.

If you use the Run Command dialog to run "notepad" in any bottle, do the Return and Backspace key work properly there?

My first language choice is British English, the next Canadian English.

Using the run command on both bottles (win2000 and winxp -- winxp is used for Renegade) for notepad allows me to use the return key perfectly fine.

The keys work fine in all other programs I have tried. It is just Renegade.

Well, language choice is a bit different than keyboard layout. I suspect though, that since you're using English, the keyboard layout is probably being handled properly by CrossOver/Wine. The fact that it works everywhere else is also a good indicator. 😉

Unfortunately, I don't have know what might be causing the problem with Renegade. You mention "Enter" in your post -- does that imply that you actually tried the Enter key on the numeric keypad as well as the Return key? Also, does the forward delete key work?

Hmm, well in response to your comment on it being just the return key, I've done some tests.

It seems that none of the number keys work (when used as keys to switch weapons or buying at a purchase terminal) nor do the return, enter, delete, forward delete, arrow keys, or mouse click (on anything besides the send button) when attempting to chat.

It's really odd.

I've tried messing around with the game a bit more.

Clicking around can sometimes get the number keys to work for weapon switching and buying, but it goes away when I open a box (chat, stats, etc.). It's hard to get them working again, too.

I wonder if it's a focus issue. Are you running the game full-screen? Can you try running it in a window? It might also be worth trying to run it using a virtual desktop window (Configure > Manage Bottles > Control Panel > winecfg > Graphics > Emulate a virtual desktop).

In CrossOver, you can switch among windows using Command-left-arrow and Command-right-arrow. Does that bring focus to the relevant window and allow the keys to work?

Yes, I thought ti was that too.
It's happened to me before, mainly with Guild Wars, where the keyboard doesn't work. Usually clicking on the screen twice fixes it when it does happen (very rarely). However in those cases the keyboard doesn't work at all for the input.

I've tried running the game in both windowed and full-screen modes. Nothing changes.

I haven't tried the emulation of the virtual desktop.
I'll check that out right now and post my results here.

Emulating a virtual desktop doesn't help.

Two bits of information that may or may not be related:

  1. The game has always been cut off at the very top and bottom by a bit when on the loading screen (and only the loading screen). I've never taken it to be too important as the screen is fine in the menus and whilst playing.

  2. Command + W does not work when trying to close Renegade. The Window tab in the menu bar flashes as any tab would when a command located within it is called, but Renegade does not close.

So does anyone have answers to my problems…?

Unfortunately we have a hard time keeping track of issues like this that are reported in the forums. Can you send in a support ticket (or email info@codeweavers.com) with a link to this thread? This will allow us to keep better track of the issue and keep you informed of what is going on.
