Where to get installation files?

Hi, I am gonna admit I am a total noob at it. I wanted to install Red Alert 2 via CrossOver on my MacBook with Mac OSX Yosemite, but only have a CD version of RA2 and have no way (no external ODD) to install the game from the said CDs. Where can I get an installation file that will guaranteedly work with Mac OS and won't require me to have an ODD?

Thank you in advance

Modern Macs (without a CD Drive) have a feature which will allow you to remotely mount a CD inserted a different Mac (with a CD player) on the same network. Do you have an older Mac you could use that way?

Otherwise, plugging into an external drive might work.

Hello and thank you for your response. Sadly, I only have one MacBook (my roomate also has a MacBook, but that's also a retina model without an ODD). I also don't own and external ODD.

Is there any chance I could download a file of the game that would for with CrossOver?

Ah, too bad. I thought that might let you use your original media so you wouldn't need a download.

I don't know whether you can get a download from a legitimate source or not. One of the other folks on the forum might know about this game in particular - all I had was the general suggestion to try a different route to using the CD you already have.

Good luck!

To my knowledge there is no official download version of Red Alert 2, which means you're out of luck with official means.

Note that even an optical drive won't really help you because the SafeDisk 2 copy protection used by this game requires raw SCSI access, which OSX doesn't allow. On Linux the copy protection of this game works though.

I see. Is there any unofficial way to get this game? I don't even mind pirating it considering I've already paid for the CDs.

Uhm, if I remember correctly you can create .dmg or .iso files from the original CDs before mounting them as sudo discs that acts in the same manner as having the original CDs plugged into you laptop.

Now if you don't have any device that has a CD drive, you could either ask a friend who does or like you said somehow download it from somewhere.

Officially we can't condone piracy of any kind even with plausible legitimate excuses or give you advice on how to do it as it can lead to other third party readers to obtaining the game illegally through the same steps. What I can advise you is to use search engines like Google to find a reliable source or collection of information and then see if they have what you need, just like what you tried to do here. ^_^

PS I'm not sure about the situation about the SafeDisc 2 but I digitalised my entire CD collection and my 3 CD disc set of Red Alert 2 in .iso format does work on my MacBook Pro late-2011 model using Yosemite OS X.

Note that Red Alert 2 needs some registry keys that are created during installation, and even their setup program is SafeDisk v2 protected. That leads to some interesting challenges, but unfortunately I cannot provide instructions on how to circumvent the copy protection ☹️ .
