Installation

In order to install I had to follow these steps...

  1. Install game on a windows computer (or bootcamp windows)

  2. The Digital Rights Management (DRM) software in this program
prevents it from running in CrossOver. If you are in a legal jurisdiction
which allows removal of such software, you may have luck running this
program. Unfortunately, CodeWeavers, because they are subject to the
Digital Millennium Copyright Act, will be unable to support you.

  3. Copy the game over to "/<user>/Application Support/Crossover/Bottles/<winxp bottle>/drive_c/Program Files/" (Copy the entire EA Games directory, or make your own and copy the C&C 3 directory)
4*. Download and extract (http://www.sweetpotatosoftware.com/files/microsoft.vc80.crt.zip) into the game's directory. The file needs to be renamed to removed the added extensions except .zip in order to extract properly.

  4. Download and extract (http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3dx9_29) into "/<user>/Application Support/Crossover/Bottles/<winxp bottle>/drive_c/windows/system32", do the same for this file (http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?gdiplus) . They are missing DLLs

  5. Open Winecfg from the crossover bottle management window.

  6. Under applications select "add application" and navigate it to "C&C3.EXE", once the application profile is created highlight "C&C3.EXE" from the list and goto the Audio panel. Select Hardware accelleration: Full, and set the sample rate to: 48000, Deselect: Emulation if it is selected. (These setting will give the best quality audio without impacting performance too much, as tested with a MacBook Pro)

  7. Apply one of these two registry settings according to the version of C&C3, be sure to insert you CD-KEY where it says "YOURKEY" in the file. Normal (http://upload2.net/page/download/Ct9wdNTVwsywUg7/cnc3.reg.html) , Kane Edition (http://www.thehandofagony.com/alex/wine/reg/cnc3kane.reg) .

  8. Load the game and set settings to Low in the options menu, some options may be pushed up a little more but may cause the game to crash.

Note that this probably only applies to the Mac version of CrossOver; I was able to install the game just fine using CrossOver 6.0.1 for Linux.

I think this might be a 6.1.0 issue because I have it installed on Ubuntu Feisty and the installation halts at copying files and then says installation fails after a few mins. I tried installing it from CD and by copying the install files to HD and installing, same result.

failing installation is something that i've been experiancing from the start, the only work around i've found was to install it on a windows machine first then copy the files over to the appropriate directory in the crossover bottle.

Matthew, I tried to do what you recommended, but I could not figure out 2 things: how to apply registry settings and also how to load the game. Loading the game consists of simply clicking the exe file right?

to apply the registry settings open Crossover and goto Programs then select Run Command. Type in Regedit for the command then say run. When Registry Editor is open goto Registry and click Import Registry, then navigate it to the cnc3.reg file you downloaded and modified to your CDKEY. When its selected, press open. It will then apply the registry file.

Next the easiest way to load the game is to go into Programs and then select Run Command, this time "Browse" and navigate it to the folder command and conquer 3 is installed in and select CNC3.EXE click open then click "Save command to programs menu" this will save the command so you don't have to find the file each time. From there you should be able to run the game from the programs menu now.

I followed all the steps and I get the startup screen then nothing happens. I'm wondering what format do you enter the CD into the .reg file.
xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx is the way I entered it.

I did all the instructions and then I get the startup picture but i stays there forever, the task manager says its running, i did the regedit command and i went into the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then software, then electronic arts, then command and conquer 3. I saw the default reg and it was not set so i put the cd key, not that xxx stuff. and about the registry key, i downloaded it but its a html file but how do i open and edit it.

On another attempt to do this when i run it i get the message that there is no language pack.

I'm using version 6.0.0

does this game actually run slow like maybe i have to wait for it forever or something

Im using a Macbook Pro with 1gb memory and radeon x1600

Matt, the registry settings file no longer exists for the normal...do you have an alternate link?

when i copied my install files to crossover, everything worked, at least till the game really started.
(the moment when u have to build power-plants etc i mean).
So the game launched perfectly, i got the menu and stuff ..

So i thought, let's try this with crossover-games, it will support the game much better.
I tried, and unfortunately it failed also! But this time even sooner, I launched it,
and immediately got this error: "an application is trying to access C library in a wrong way".

What could have gone wrong ?

karbonadeslaatje, same problem for me. But the game don't launch, juste CC3 screen, message and quit. Maybe the patch 1.9 ?

hey matthew,

how do i install the game itself? Im using windows vista 32 bit. It says i have to drag the icon into an "application folder" (what does that mean) but there is no "command and conquer" icon when i open the folder.

John,

I'm not quite sure why you're here if you're trying to run this game under Vista... This is a support forum for trying to run this game under Crossover, on either Mac OS X or Linux.

As for installing, I haven't tried to install this game on any type of Windows machine, however it does come with a Windows installer program. There is no dragging of icons to application folders involved - you just step through the installer and the game will turn up in your Start menu.

thanks steve,

just realised that they gave me the cd for Mac not Vista..

Thanks..

Apologies for the edit!
