The Steam release of DiRT downloads and installs fine via the Steam
GUI, however fails to start due to some error that's proving elusive
to track down. Most all of the config files for this title are in XML,
and the ../../$gamedir/hardwaresettings/hardware_settings_config.xml
created/appended to at launch time maybe the place to start looking
for answers -- will recheck when CXG-9.0 comes out...

Thanks for the nudge here - most of my 'known problematic' apps
tend to fall to the bottom of my list...I just retested Dirt on
this rig (CLFS multilib/nv9800gt w/ 1024mb + 256.xx nvidia drivers)
-- loads to splashscreen (640x480 window, emulated desktop OFF for
the Steam bottle) and that's it....slowly turns to mud and becomes
unresponsive chewing 80% CPU timeslice on a 2,2ghz amdx2 dualcore :
killall -9 dirt.exe 8)

I'll let the imac have at it a bit later on and see what happens
there -- I'll have another debug run at it in linux later as well,
and diff that against my previous logs to see if anything's shifted.

I could of course just said "no, no luck with at all yet" <grin>
