Unable to start a new game

I've successfully installed Civ V and the menus work, but when I try to start a game it gets stuck at the "Loading..." screen, and never makes it to "Begin your journey". The introduction text audio works fine, but nothing happens after it's finished. I've left the game for several hours on "Loading..." and nothing ever happens. I've tried various settings for the game (graphics quality, map size, etc) but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

There is a serious problem with Civ V on OSX 10.5 (leopard) which is fixed on 10.6 (snow leopard). The problem you're seeing is similar to what I was getting on my leopard machine.

If you apply this c4p to your civV bottle, you should be able to make it past the crash you're currently seeing:

However, that c4p dramatically degrades performance, so you may find the game too slow to play. At the moment, upgrading to SnowLeopard is your best bet to get a decent CivV experience. The landscape is rendered strangely but the game is playable and fun.

Thanks, I upgraded to 10.6 and the game works now.

So I am having this problem exactly, but not on a mac. Here are my specs:
Ubuntu 10.10
Ati Radeon HD 5700
2 Gb ram

A couple things I noticed, which might help:
I could call up other things with keyboard shortcuts while stuck in loading, like alt+F2 and 'go to desktop', but the loading screen never changed. I could only tell it had worked by moving the mouse around and watching it change from Civ V spinning globe to regular mouse to text input and so on. nothing was able to get rid of the loading screen except xkill, and after doing that my screen resolution was lowered and steam wouldn't shut down because it thought Civ was still running.

Hope there's a resolution to this problem!
Thanks

I have the same problem on Ubuntu 11.04. Need fixs for this please
