So here's the problem. I can launch the game and change settings all that I want. However, I have yet to find any graphics combination that doesn't cause the following problem:
When I start a new game I get the whole audio intro and I can read the text, however, the screen behind it always looks messed up. Then, after the Loading bar turns into the "Begin your journey" button, the whole thing freezes up a few seconds later, but the audio keeps going.
I have noticed that if I click "begin your journey" fast enough, the game starts and I can see my warrior and settler, but again, a few second later the whole thing freezes up again. Finally, If I click "begin your journey" fast enough and then hit "F10" fast enough I can enter the strategic view and play pretty well using that mode.
I've seen others describe similar sounding issues. The solution was always to change the video settings up and down. I have gone up and down and have started methodically going through each graphic iteration. I'll post my results in an update.
In the meantime, is there anything else I should try? Also, has anyone with an ATI graphics card gotten this to work on a linux system? I think all the unresolved posts here and over on the Wine forum are linux users with an ATI card.
