What is working thus far

This is a thread to collect what is helping the game work. If you need help, please create a new thread or ask you question in a related thread. This thread is only to collect the tips that get Civilization V working in Steam. These items may be added to the tips & tricks section in the next few days.

Select the DX9 option for launching.

Be patient when Civilization V is first started. There is a long pause before the menu appears where the screen may be black or white. We've had reports that this lasts up to five minutes.

If your terrain map is grey...
Turn down your graphics settings

In some cases, CIV V is not running if overlay details are set to high, change them to low.

In some cases, the game will not launch -at all- if Leader Quality is set above Minimum. The solution is to edit or remove the user config .ini files in your Civ5 user dir and restart the game. The config file is in /home/USERNAME/Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 5 Demo, where USERNAME is your system username.

Finally, if CIV V won't run, it may be that it's installation of of VC++ 2008 didn't complete properly. MSVC++ 2008 can manually be added from the 'Runtime Support Components' section of CrossOver Games.

I installed this (I wish it weren't Steam) and nothing happens. I don't have a My Games directory under my home. Is there something else I am missing?

Edit: I figure out the whole VC++ 2008 thing and it has launched.

Okay, so I'm running Crossover 9.1.0 and I have installed steam and Civ 5 without issue. The game launches and I am able to get to the menus and edit settings. No matter what I do however... I cannot setup a game, load a game or play a quick game. Once any game option is clicked it either freezes (in the case of load and setup) or plays the intro AUDIO but stays on the menu screen.

I have attempted to reinstall the MSVC++ 2008 again and this in fact made it worse, as now it wont launch at all. I deleted the config file and still no joy. All settings are set to low or off and this seems to be the same in windowed or fullscreen mode.

System stats:
Macbook - early 2010
Processor: 2.53 GHz c2d
Memory: 4GB
Drive: 500gb
OSX 10.6.4 (up to date)

Any ideas would be appreciated, because since I tried the fixes even installing it in a new bottle isn't helping.

Do you mean CrossOver Pro or Standard 9.1.0? Or CrossOver Games 9.1.0? You should definitely be using CrossOver Games.

You should try renaming the folder ~/Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 5 to reset everything to its defaults.

You should ask Steam to verify the local game files.

When you say it won't launch at all, what, precisely, happens?

I was using Crossover Pro, I switched to Crossover Games and it worked without any trouble at all. Still Crossover Pro 9.1.0 got in to the game, it just wouldn't get past the menus.

I also do not have a My Games folder in my home directory.

It should be ~/Documents/My Games. That is, the My Games directory is within a Documents directory in your home.

I have corrected the original post.

Hi there.

I'm using Cross Over Games - when i try to click on 'play' to launch Civ 5 from within Steam, the 'preparing to launch...' screen of steam blinks on and off 4-5 times, then nothing seems to happen.

I dont see anything to indicate Civ is launching.

Any ideas?

This is the first time ive tried using crossover software.

my system:
Macbook Pro,
2.66ghz Intel Core i7 / 2 cores
4GB ram

Thanks for your help!

Chris

Hmm. For me, since the update of Civ V of Oct. 22nd, I get a random number (2 to ~12) of "Preparing to launch" dialogs, but CivV does eventually launch. I did see it fail once, when I closed the main Steam window. In that case, it just stopped giving the "Preparing to launch" dialogs. So, I leave the Steam window open.

It does it more than just 4-5 times for me, but then nothing just like what you're saying.

MacPro 2,1, quad-core Xeon 3ghz
12gb ram
ATI Radeon X1900 XT (512mb)

I've played multiple games at this point. With zero problems.

I'm running Cross Over Games 10.1 on Linux Mint x64. I'm running the Steam version of the game and I installed it into the Steam bottle.

It takes a few moments to load, but after that it's smooth sailing and literally haven't seen a single hiccup at this point.

I'm also running all the various DLC's/ExPac's, and the latest update of the game. I ranked it as gold, as it's running perfectly for me.

[b]EDIT:
Please ignore this, i didn't know how to use Crossover very well when I posted this

Hi Carol,

Where can I find this?

Thanks,
Alex

I made this thread unsticky because it seems to be a bit outdated...
