i bought the complete civ iv package off gamestop.com for $10. quite a deal actually. anyhow, i ran the executable in a new bottle, it installed just fine, to my untrained eye. when i went to run the game, i get nothing. i find the game manually, launch it with the run command tool, and it runs for a few seconds, then nothing. do i have to find a coughcough even though i legally downloaded it? also, how do i know what version it is so i can apply a recent update/patch?
I'm pretty sure they removed the requirement to <snip! - Ed> with Beyond the Sword, so if you run that you should be good to go. I can't remember if my DVD copy required it or not before or after patching BTS, but there was at least one patch I downloaded and it worked.
Though after that I grabbed a copy of all the Civ games on Steam for about a fiver, and that Just Works.
For future reference, needing to <snip again! - Ed> is pretty much ONLY for retail games, as a consequence of how DRM only hurts legal customers - the "other" copies have that built in.
I highly suggest buying such games via service that doesn't screw you over too much like Steam, or buying DRM free releases.
