Freezes on startup - Steam version

I have the Steam version of this game in CrossOver Games 9.0b7. When I click "play" in Steam the game launches and the intro videos play. However, at the moment the menu is supposed to appear the screen instead turns black. What's weird is that the main menu theme keeps playing even though nothing more happens on the screen. If I bring up the task manager it says that the game is not responding. Apparently this game is supposed to work in CrossOver, so does anyone know why it doesn't for me?

You don't say what kind of machine you're running, what OS version, what GPU, etc. That info may be helpful.

I suspect the issue is that it's trying to use an unsupported resolution. You can try going to Manage Bottles > Control Panel > Wine Configuration (winecfg) > Graphics > enable Emulate a virtual desktop > pick a desktop window size > OK. Exit everything in the bottle. Now launch Steam and Civ IV. Does it work any better?

If so, configure Civ IV for your desired resolution, something that you're sure your display supports. Then, exit it and Steam. Repeat the above procedure, except disable the virtual desktop. Maybe after having configured Civ IV to some reasonable dimensions, it will be happy on the next launch.

Thanks for the reply. You're right, I should have mentioned more information about my system. I'm running 10.6.3 on a Mac Pro with an 8800GT. I did try to use the emulate a virtual desktop feature, with pretty much the same result, except that my screen turned blue instead of black (which if I recall correctly is the background color of the Civ IV main menu), and the main menu music actually played.

Now that Steam is out for Mac though, and Civilization IV Complete for Mac is on Steam too, I guess I'll use that now.
