How to get it to run
  1. Install Borderlands 2 on your System (eighter via Steam or CD)
  2. Start the game. It will maybe install some Visual-C-Runtimes and other stuff. After that, it will install itself.
  3. Create a new file called "steam_appid.txt" in "Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/common/Borderlands 2/Binaries/Win32/" and fill it
    with "49520" (without quotes).
  4. Copy Borderlands2.exe over Launcher.exe. This is important becasuse the launcher wont work.
  5. Start regedit.exe. Create a "string value" in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D" (you maybe have to vreate the key). Call it "VideoMemorySize" and give it the memory size of your graphic card (in MB, but without a unit). This is important because otherwise changing resolution will crash your game (and once crashed you can't start it to fix it anymore)
  6. PLAY THE GAME!

Tested with Crossover 11.3 on Gentoo Linux

Thanks for this! Worked for me using Ubuntu 12.10.

Another note:

Since Crossover 12.0 (KDE 4.9.3), the "Steam"-Window seems to be still clickable while Borderlands 2 is running in fullscreen. The solution is either to start Borderlands 2 in a new virtual desktop or to close the Steam Window and start Borderlands from the Steam-Tray. I also have to Alt-Tab into the game.

Is there a similar trick that might work for the MAC? I am still new to crossover and am only able to get the game to start-up (using the borderlands.exe to launcher.exe trick above), but then the program hangs at a black start-up type screen after one quick audio blip.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately I have no MAC here to test it myself...

However I have installed some other system application (due to some other Steam-games in the same bottle), maybe you try to install one of these:

  • Microsoft .NET 2.0
  • NVidia PhysX
  • MSXML 3.0
  • DirectX
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2005
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2008
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2010

Does the screen just stay black or does any error message appear?

The screen stays black and I need to force quit out. It "almost" looks like there is something in a small box on the top left of my screen (flashes a little), but I can't get a cursor or to any readable screen.

EDIT: I created a stand-alone bottle with only the items list above - again the game starts up and I get a black screen. I get a cursor only at the top of the screen, which seems to be 4:3. Is there any way to chance the graphics settings prior to starting the game? I think that may help. I do not however get any audio from the intro screens, so I can't really tell if the game is running or not. I end up having to force quit out.

Thanks again for your help.
