BibleWorks 6.0 on Crossover 3.0.1

BibleWorks 6.0 installs cleanly on CrossoverOffice 3.0.1, and some have reported that it runs well too. I've not yet found it to run reliably; it starts up OK, but then crashes randomly during program operation on my Gentoo Linux machine (kernel 2.4.27, glibc 2.3.3).

BibleWorks 4.0 seems to run without significant problems; BibleWorks 5 has some installation glitches, but otherwise seems to install and run without crashing as well. Other user experiences are welcome (but be sure to describe what platform you're running on)!

BW 6.0 runs on the latest cxoffice perfectly for me. One of the tricks is to install IE before installing BW (and then erasing any IE icons as fast as you can, of course). I've been using BW and cxoffice on Mandrake, and now Mepis, and I'm loving it. The fonts look SOOOO much nicer under cxoffice in linux...

Have you seen BW run stably even in multiple-version mode? I find that if I'm in browse mode (i.e., looking at whole passages in a single version), then it's reasonably stable. Once I switch to multiple-version mode, though, even if I only have a single version displayed, it eventually crashes randomly while I'm navigating around. For example, here's a reliable repro case:

Start up BW6; it's displaying Gen. 1 in browse mode in the KJV. Word tips and navigation seem to behave without issues.
Now I go to Gen. 1:1 again, and switch to browse mode. Again, word tips seem to work fine.
Now I click on the down arrow to move to Gen. 1:2, and float back over the verse; next thing I know, BW6 has crashed (sometimes before a word tip shows up, sometimes after).

This crash even happens without word tips turned on. Do you not see this? I've now verified this behavior on Gentoo Linux, Fedora Core 2, and Mandrake 10.1, so I conclude that it's not distribution-specific.

Eric, I can't reproduce this bug. Sorry. The only crash I get happens when I try to create a secondary word-list.
I just reinstalled Mepis too, and can't get BW to recognize the fact that I've got the net bible installed. This is rather annoying.
I've run cxoffice in Mandrake 10.0, Simply Mepis, and Debian Unstable; I haven't seen those problems. Sorry.
Are you getting any log output?

No log output except the typical inscrutable crash data when BW goes down. :( How strange that I can reproduce this so readily on multiple setups, but you can't at all... there was a typo in my last message, though; the crash happens in multiple-version mode, not in browse mode...

Eric, I wish I could figure it out; it's just weird. Do you have a box that you can test out a mepis install?
And what seminary are you at?

I'm at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary north of Boston, MA.

OK, I just installed Mepis (2004.04) on a second partition on my computer and... well, still no luck. Same crash, same repro case. :(

I'm a GCTS alum, what building are you living in?
Dude, how are you going about installing?
Are you installing dcom95 and IE first?
What's your system setup?

Building B.

I install DCOM95, then IE, then copy MFC42.DLL into the Windows\System directory, then install BW 6.0.

I've got an Athlon XP 1700+ system with 256MB RAM and an NVidia NForce motherboard with GeForce2 MX integrated graphics system. I'm using the standard XFree86 "nv" driver at 16bpp. I've tried running at 24bpp as well with the same results. I've got Linux kernel 2.4.27, but again, I've seen the problem on multiple distributions with different kernels now.

We lived in A203.
Why are you copying the MFC42.DLL file; I've never done that step....

See my note under "Tips & Tricks"; without the MFC42.DLL file, I get an error during installation regarding registration of fhlaunch.ocx. In any case, I don't think it has anything to do with the problems I'm seeing, because I am fairly certain I saw the crash without that step as well.

We've got to be doing something different....
How did you install cxoffice...

Here's the exact steps I just followed to install BW6.

  • Install Crossover 4.1 (now available via advocate center) with the Loki installer script in a clean account (i.e., no ~/.cxoffice or ~/cxoffice directory).
  • Use default configuration settings for Crossover Office.
  • Install DCOM95 with Express install.
  • Install Internet Explorer 6.0 with Express Install; install with "Typical set of components" (I usually install with minimal, but for simplicity's sake, I do it with typical here).
  • Install BibleWorks 6 from CD-ROM with "Custom" installation, and default choices of components and installation steps; after confirming that HTML Help is installed, the program throws an error dialog entitled "Self-Registration Error" which reads:

    1. C:\Windows\System\fhlaunch.ocx
      Module not found.

To continue, click OK; otherwise, click Cancel.

I click OK, then Finish to complete the installation process.

I then exit CrossOver Office Setup, and run ~/cxoffice/bin/bw600. Going into multiple-version mode, then repeatedly switching between Gen. 1:1 and 1:2, each time floating the mouse back over the verse, I get a crash by the third or fourth iteration.

Eric, I just don't know. I'm about to get a new laptop, and I'll start my installation from scratch, maybe I'll figure it out. Would you like to take a look at the file from my .cxoffice directory; maybe there's something in there that will help you out...

Eric, I just got my new laptop; installed simply mepis 2004, cxoffice, and BW. Here's what I did...

  1. Installed cxoffice
  2. Installed dcom95
  3. Installed IE (typical)
  4. Installed BW.

No problems, no crashes. There's got to be something deeper in your system setup that we're missing.

Indeed, there must be something different... but I think we're stuck for now. I'll keep playing around, I guess.

I wish I could say what the cause is...do you want a copy of my installed packages? Maybe that'll trigger something...

Well, as of today, I've got a working installation of BW6 with CO 4.1. The difference? I lost my Linux partition the other day due to an over-aggressive Windows install that was supposed to install to another partition... :( So I had to install Linux from the ground up (with data backup remotely, fortunately).

After all was said and done, I had a clean Gentoo installation with 2.6.10 kernel... and now BibleWorks seems to work without crashing! I'll hold off on jumping for joy until I've had more time to work with it, though.

Eric, how's it working?

Hey Wesley,

Sorry for the long delay -- BW 6.0 has been working fine with CO 4.2 since March (hence my silence)...

Eric
