No toolbar? Yes, no toolbar!

There is this problem that BibleWorks 9, and previous versions, do not show the toolbar, but show just an empty space. I then saw an option to hide the toolbar completely. This has two advantages to me:

  1. The problem is hidden, or worked around.
  2. Extra space becomes available on the screen which can now be devoted to Bibledit's resources.
The option is in menu Tools / Options, then go to General / Flags / Startup options, and remove the tick from "Show Main Window Toolbar". I thought to share this trick, because, though it is simple, I never thought of it, and always was staring at this empty toolbar, and this simple solution solved the problem. Perhaps others are like me, and may be helped also with this simple trick.

Thank you for posting this. I had found this option also, but had not posted it. This does indeed recover the wasted space occupied by the empty toolbar which is important on computers with smaller screens such as netbooks. It isn't much space, but when screen area is limited, even that little bit can make a difference.

Ooops, I guess I did something wrong, because my new install of BibleWorks 6 works perfectly AND displays the toolbar perfectly!

Here's what I did:

  • Installed Crossover on my MacBook Pro - OS X 10.7.1 (Lion)
  • Created a WinXP Bottle
  • Installed IE7 (I can't believe I just admitted that:)
  • Installed .NET Framework 3.0
  • Installed SwordSearcher Bible Software 6.0 (I doubt this changed anything, but just for the record)
  • Installed BibleWorks 6 -- Perfect Functionality with toolbar!!

- To save my previous settings, preferences, and layout; I copied the "BW600.ini" file from my old PC and used it to overwrite the file by the same name in the Crossover installation - Perfect!

Just for the record - this is performing better than it did under Parallels!

Don't know if this will help anyone with a newer version, but I thought I'd share my results.

The difference too may be in that you are running Crossover on OS X. The problem occurs with Linux, so there must be some essential difference between the two platforms that allows it to work for you and not for Linux users (like me).

I am very happy that you have it working. Hopefully, things will get to the point where it will also work on Linux.

The problem with the menu started in BW 7 - prior to that it ran pretty much flawlessly under wine.

Happy news: This should be fixed in the current BW9 exe!

I can verify that this problem is indeed fixed. With the update, I now see the toolbar correctly.

This does not change my rating of Silver though, unless I can rate it Silver+. The one remaining problem, which is somewhat major, is in the resources that are in .chm format. I can cause a crash every time when I try to view one of these resources from within BW9 (and previous versions). I can click on it and get an initial display, but attempting to do anything from there causes it to fail.

The alternate option for Linux users is to use a Linux viewer for .chm files such as xchm, chmsee, kchmviewer, or archmage. However, it takes away some of the usefulness because one cannot directly open the resources within the program and work within them.

I am willing to be shown how to do so. If that can be done, then BW9 would certainly be worth a Gold rating.
