Due to a problem with the memory management utility on the BibleWorks 9 installation DVD, BibleWorks 9 will not successfully install in Crossover Office Pro on 64 bit Fedora 15 Linux. I am not sure about other distributions or 32 bit Linux since I only have the 64 bit version installed.
The problem:
When attempting to install BibleWorks 9, I get this message:
SmartHeap license error: SMP version required for hardware with more than one processor package.
This is at the stage where the installation is reading:
Registering BibleWorks as an Automation Server...
System is an Acer Aspire One 722-BZ454, Model:P1VE6
Processor: AMD Dual-Core Processor C-50 (1.0 GHz)
I hit cancel since hitting ok did not do anything except go back to the same message. The message came back up. Then I hit cancel again, and the installation appeared to have completed. However, when I attempt to launch the program, the same error message appears.
The solution:
I went on the Facebook page for BibleWorks and posed a question there about this problem. I received this reply:
BibleWorks
Stephen, unfortunately SmartHeap has an error. To get around it until they fix it, please follow these steps:
-
Go to your BibleWorks folder and rename bw900.exe to bw900_orig.exe
-
Download this zip file:
http://www.bibleworks.com/support/et7br/bw900_nosh.zip
-
Extract the contents of the zip file into your BibleWorks folder.
-
Run BibleWorks.
Follow-up: Since applying this fix and running the program successfully, BibleWorks has issued an update to the program that addresses this. After getting the program running, one should check for updates.
Also, although menu items were made in the Gnome Shell (Gnome 3 on Fedora 15), the icons for BibleWorks had the generic Wine icon. To fix this, I went on the BibleWorks site and the BibleWorks Facebook page and saved a couple of images, including the BibleWorks avatar icon from Facebook. I then manually edited the program launchers using Alacarte and associated the icon for the launcher with one of the images I had downloaded (I had stored them in the /opt/cxoffice/share/images folder).
I would rate BibleWorks as Silver. The icon bar that should appear is still missing, and the program does have some stability issues when trying to view some of the resources. However, the main window runs very well.
I do not know if BibleWorks 9 packages shipped in the future will have the fix pre-applied, so this may be needed if anyone else decides to purchase BW9 or upgrade to it from a previous version.
