BibleWorks 9 installation

Due to a problem with the memory management utility on the BibleWorks 9 installation DVD, BibleWorks 9 will not successfully install in Crossover Office Pro on 64 bit Fedora 15 Linux. I am not sure about other distributions or 32 bit Linux since I only have the 64 bit version installed.

The problem:

When attempting to install BibleWorks 9, I get this message:

SmartHeap license error: SMP version required for hardware with more than one processor package.

This is at the stage where the installation is reading:

Registering BibleWorks as an Automation Server...

System is an Acer Aspire One 722-BZ454, Model:P1VE6
Processor: AMD Dual-Core Processor C-50 (1.0 GHz)

I hit cancel since hitting ok did not do anything except go back to the same message. The message came back up. Then I hit cancel again, and the installation appeared to have completed. However, when I attempt to launch the program, the same error message appears.

The solution:

I went on the Facebook page for BibleWorks and posed a question there about this problem. I received this reply:

BibleWorks
Stephen, unfortunately SmartHeap has an error. To get around it until they fix it, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to your BibleWorks folder and rename bw900.exe to bw900_orig.exe

  2. Download this zip file:

http://www.bibleworks.com/support/et7br/bw900_nosh.zip

  1. Extract the contents of the zip file into your BibleWorks folder.

  2. Run BibleWorks.

Follow-up: Since applying this fix and running the program successfully, BibleWorks has issued an update to the program that addresses this. After getting the program running, one should check for updates.

Also, although menu items were made in the Gnome Shell (Gnome 3 on Fedora 15), the icons for BibleWorks had the generic Wine icon. To fix this, I went on the BibleWorks site and the BibleWorks Facebook page and saved a couple of images, including the BibleWorks avatar icon from Facebook. I then manually edited the program launchers using Alacarte and associated the icon for the launcher with one of the images I had downloaded (I had stored them in the /opt/cxoffice/share/images folder).

I would rate BibleWorks as Silver. The icon bar that should appear is still missing, and the program does have some stability issues when trying to view some of the resources. However, the main window runs very well.

I do not know if BibleWorks 9 packages shipped in the future will have the fix pre-applied, so this may be needed if anyone else decides to purchase BW9 or upgrade to it from a previous version.

Thanks, man! I've ordered the same version, and need to install it on Ubuntu 64 bit, so the suggestion is going to help! Teus Benschop

Please let me know how this goes for you.

I have gone through a similar process on my Ubuntu 11.04 (64-bit) installation, and it works. During the install from the DVD, I found that I could not respond to the dialog for Disc2 because my system had mounted the first DVD as BW9DVD1 and the second one mounts as BW9DVD2. However, by making a symbolic link from the name BW9DVD1 to the mounted BW9DVD2, I was able to proceed. If you have this problem you may do this by opening a terminal window entered this:

sudo ln -s /media/BW9DVD2 /media/BW9DVD1

I then had the same issue when the third disk mounted as BW9DVD3. This can be corrected by these two commands:

sudo rm /media/BW9DVD1
sudo ln -s /media/BW9DVD3 /media/BW9DVD1

When you are all done the install, end with this to clean up the symbolic link

sudo rm /media/BW9DVD1

For me, most of BW9 works including the video. However, there are no buttons under the menu bar. Has anyone seen this and/or know how to fix it?

Thank you for the additional hints on installing BW9.

As for the menu bar, this has been a long-standing issue. Some time back, it was recommended to install Internet Explorer 6, but other posts suggested that this did not fix it. The IE6 requirement was so that the program installer could safely assume Internet access for getting updates. Neither BW8 nor BW9 require it as the cxoffice bottles appear to have sufficient Internet access to satisfy the installer. I have yet to find a solution to the missing buttons. I had hoped that BW9 would have addressed this issue, but it remains.

edit: Reduce quoted material to the part I intended to address.

Additional: I have been most successful with BibleWorks by using a Windows Vista bottle. It seems to be more stable there than when I had previously chosen a Windows XP bottle.

I tried BW9 on Ubuntu 11.04 64 bits. The installer's window was so small that only a bit of the titlebar could be seen. I failed to enlarge it. Thus the installation on Ubuntu didn't work. What worked though is to run a virtual machine with Windows on Linux. That's the only way for me to access the updated resources in BW9.

Which desktop environment were you using? It might have some bearing on the issue. I was installing in Fedora 15 using Gnome Shell. It may be that Unity has some issues here that Gnome Shell doesn't.

I am using Gnome Shell, but have since discovered that the likely cause of the problem is a DVD that could not be read properly, so some files were missing. After fixing this I'll try again.

I hope it works this time. Since the netbook I was installing on did not have an optical drive, I copied the contents of the first DVD in full to a folder on my desktop system, then added in the data3 and data4 cab files from the 2nd and 3rd DVDs, then used FileZilla to transfer them over to my netbook and installed from there (a USB stick large enough to hold all files would have worked just as well and been quicker).

Anyway, right now, I have done some hardware reconfiguring, moving a solid-state drive over to the new netbook and trying to get everything reconfigured again before seminary classes start.

While installing on Ubuntu 11.04 64 bits, the same message comes:

SmartHeap license error: SMP version required for hardware with more
than one processor package

I've contacted BibleWorks support for help. The download described in the post I am replying to is no longer there.

I did not see the post until this morning. Were you successful in getting the file? Were you able to get BW9 running? I edited the initial post to change the link to a proper hyperlink rather than typing it in. It should work better now. The file is still there. I just checked.

Yes, it now runs well on Ubuntu 11.04 64 bits, through cxoffice.

For some reason I cannot get it to work as an Automation Server. Need to look into this further.

Perhaps I don't understand the need for it to so work. What is it supposed to do as an Automation Server? What functionality does that provide that isn't there otherwise? I know that one of the initial error messages I saw was related to registering it as an Automation Server. However, I have seen nothing further about this after applying the initial patch and then updating as patches were available.

As for the use of BW900 as an Automation Server, we use it to make BibleWorks scroll to the same verse as where we are translating in Bibledit-Gtk (bibledit.org). But no problem, I've gotten it to work in vanilla wine, and am happily using BibleWorks as an Automation Server now.

I am running OS X Mountain Lion. I have installed BibleWorks 9 and followed the instructions to include replacing the bw900.exe with the new file. Still getting the Smart Heap License error. Is anyone else having this program with Mountain Lion?

Please can anybody help me.. I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, and when I mount first disc 1 everything is okay, and then starts to install and shows a message "Please place the DVD labeled Disc 2" Don't know what to do.... Help:(
