Battlezone Not Functional in Linux

I was able to successfully install Battlezone in both a Win98 and WinXP bottle on the following machine:

Soyo SY-7ISA+ Intel i815 Motherboard
Intel Pentium III 866 MHz Processor
512 MB SDRAM
PNY Verto GeForce FX 5200 AGP 8x 256 MB DDR
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 PCI Sound Card (SB0220)
Samsung CD-RW/DVD Drive Model: TS-H492A/RSWN
Dual Boot openSUSE Linux 10.3/Windows XP Pro SP3
CodeWeavers CrossOver Games for Linux Version 7.1.2

I installed the base game and the Version 1.4 patch as well as the entire Gold version consisting of the base game, the Version 1.4 patch, The Red Odyssey expansion, the Battlegrounds expansion, and the large assets pack. I also tried installing using both the software and hardware renderer.

The following results applied regardless of the installation process used. In order to start the game, it was necessary to use the setup.exe program on the CD-ROM rather than the one on the hard drive in order to start the game launcher. After selecting Play in the launcher, the introductory video plays properly, but when it completes, rather than seeing the main menu, all I can see is a black screen and an arrow cursor that is not displayed properly. In a properly functioning installation, sounds can be heard as the mouse is moved over possible menu items, but I could hear no such sounds in any of my installations as I moved the mouse around on the black screen. I was obliged to terminate the terminal sessions rather than exiting the program gracefully.

Added to tips and tricks.

Have you considered signing up to be an advocate? You are doing the description of advocate by creating instructions detailing how you were able to get an application to install. And, you have done it for so many applications, seems like something worthy of advocate status.

Well, it sounds like being an advocate is a long term thing, and I don't really expect to have much time to do it properly in the near future. I had never bothered to try Wine, so I was curious to see how well (or if) Wine/CrossOver worked on my old machine. The Lame Duck Challenge offered an opportunity to do that with a legitimate copy of CrossOver, and I didn't mind spending a little effort to post the results of my tests and creating a few entries in the compatibility database as a tangible way of saying of "thanks".

With regard to Battlezone, entries in the WineHQ database seem to suggest that it can be made to run by deleting the anim directory, but I haven't had a chance to try that yet.
