I had played the Mac App Store versions of both Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. Neither seem to be available for purchase on the Mac App Store anymore which is a shame especially since B:AC was updated to 64-bit and runs quite nicely on my 2019 iMac with MacOS 13.1 Ventura. (I can run B:AA on that Mac also but need to reboot to my MacOS 10.14.6 Mojave boot volume to do it because it is a 32-bit application.) I've been trying some on-sale games from GOG with Crossover and decided to buy Batman: Arkham Origins from them to try with Crossover. B:AO had much weaker reviews than the other two games and does not feature Kevin Conroy as the voice actor for Batman nor Mark Hamill as the voice actor for Joker but still has generally "good" reviews.
I can't get the Windows version of "GOG Galaxy" – GOG's installer and updater – to run in Crossover. They have a Mac version but this is not a Mac game so that does me no good. Fortunately, GOG also makes available "offline backup game installers" i.e. normal installers for all their games, so GOG Galaxy isn't needed. Unlike all the other games I have been trying from GOG, the B:AO installer came in five parts each downloaded individually: One installer executable and four binary packages. I thought I might have to move all these into the bottle for Crossover to install the game properly but that turned out to not be necessary; I just left them in my ~/Downloads folder and had no trouble.
First I created a Windows 10 64-bit bottle. Then I installed "DirectX for Modern Games" into the bottle. There is a "tip" for B:AO here in this Crossover listing from one of Crossover's "better testers" which suggests that this is necessary for the game to run. And I do that with every bottle anyway. Then I installed from the GOG installer executable sitting in my Downloads folder. It took a fairly long time to install, over 5 minutes (the downloaded installer executable and binaries were a total of about 16gb), but everything proceeded with little fuss. Then I enabled DXVK for that bottle.
The first time I launched the game, MacOS nagged me to give the game permission to access my ~/Documents folder. (The game keeps its save game files in ~/Documents/WB Games/Batman Arkham Origins.) I granted permission and the game launched in Full Screen Mode. I haven't played much yet but the only odd thing I've noted so far is that when in Full Screen Mode, in order to get back to the game after switching to another Desktop or command-tabbing to another application, one has to click on the icon in the Dock and then go to the menu bar->WINDOW->BATMAN: ARKHAM ORIGINS in order to get back to the game because the game minimizes to the Dock when in Full Screen Mode. In Windowed Mode this is not an issue but the mouse cursor isn't bound to the game window and you can see the menu bar and, if not hidden via system preferences, the Dock. I have not found a way to start the game in Full Screen Windowed Mode, perhaps that is not possible. Also, in Windowed Mode, the mouse cursor doesn't seem to follow the mouse movements very well. It's also kind of annoying for the game sound to continue playing through my speakers when I move to another Desktop or command-tab to another application, there doesn't seem to be any way to disable sound when the application isn't the focus. Even a game as terribly-coded as Lord of the Rings Online has that function, but not B:AO.
Since I have never played this game before I'm looking forward to finding some time to play through the story. GOG made it easy (and inexpensive) to buy and download, Crossover made it easy to install, and it seems to be working fine with the exception of the return-to-app and Windowed Mode issues I noted above which are not very significant.
