Window issues

Running the GOG version of BG in a win98 bottle. I cannot run the game fullscreen because the bottom portion of the screen is clipped off and I cannot scroll down. I can run it in a very small window when I de-select fullscreen in-game and set the graphics to keep the mouse from leaving the window (the mouse leaves the window but when I reach the edge of my actual screen the scrolling arrows appear).

The game is playable but the window in which it plays is rather small. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Due to its age, the Baldur's Gate version of the Infinity Engine only support 640x480 resolution. It's probably cut off in fullscreen due to the 4:3 resolution not getting stretched to widescreen. There's an unofficial but last I heard very stable mod called "bgtutu" which actually ports the entire Baldur's Gate game experience to the newer Baldur's Gate 2 engine. I believe the most reliable way of accomplishing this is called EasyTutu. I have myself used EasyTutu and had excellent results, however that was with a Mac-native version of the games a few years ago. Note that bgtutu requires that you also own Baldur's Gate 2 (the expansion is optional), in this case in Windows form. Feel free to come back with specific questions. Good luck!

Hi Jonathan,

You can get the GOG.com version to run in fullscreen mode without the bottom part of the screen being clipped off. Here's how:

  • Open Manage Bottles in the Configure menu, select your Baldur's Gate bottle then go to the Control Panel tab and launch the Wine Configuration tool

  • Under the Graphics tab, untick the Allow the window manager to decorate the windows and Allow the window manager to control the windows checkboxes

I also tried the widescreen mod mentioned in the previous post, but it didn't work with the GOG.com version.
By the way, all GOG.com version games should be installed in WinXP bottles.

Hope this helped!

Cheers,
John

Hey guys,

Thanks for the advice. John, I followed your steps and the game plays just fine now, so thank you. I had previously installed BG in another bottle (the default; I can't remember if it was XP or otherwise) and the game crashed as soon as an NPC cast a spell. Why do you recommend installing a XP bottle?

Again, thanks to both of you for your help. It's great to see that this product has such great support from the community.

Hey Jonathan,

Titles released on GOG.com are most often patched to be XP / Vista / Windows 7 compatible, therefore I assume it's best to install them into a WinXP bottle. These patches might break backwards Win95/98 compatibility sometimes, but I haven't actually checked this in the case of Baldur's Gate. As a general rule, I always try to install GOG.com games into an XP bottle first and have had good results so far.

Glad to hear that you're running BG in real fullscreen mode now :)

Cheers,
John
