I am running Maya 7.0 now, straight out of the box b/c they produce a linux version with .rpms
yes there is a maya for Linux, windows and mac os there also use to be a version for SGI's version of UNIX but support for that has been droped in favour of linux
Fair enough, they do make Maya for all of the major platforms, but the Max OS X version of Maya is not available as a Universal Binary and therefore suffers reduced performance on Apple computers with Intel processors. For now I have been rebooting my computer into Windows XP and using the x86 version of Maya for windows, but I would definitely be interested in running the Windows version of Maya under Mac OS X using crossover (wine).
maya 9 should have a universal version(when it comes out), the windows version, if it installs and runs should run quite fast.
theres no direct x just pure open gl in maya so you properly won't have too many issues, though the copy protection will properly dampen things
