DirectX error when launching the client in Ubuntu 11.11

I've installed AC via Crossover Games 10.3 on Ubuntu Onieric 11.11 32bit. My video card is the NVIDIA 7600GT and I've got the latest proprietary drivers (280.13-0ubuntu6) installed. I've installed Asheron's Call Throne of Destiny in it's own bottle using the crosstie file from your website. The launcher runs, I can log in and get to the server screen. Then when I try to go into a server and launch the actual client I get a black windowed screen and the following error message:

"The game encountered a fatal DirectX issue while attempting to start. Try a different screen resolution or bit depth. If that doesn't work, try new video drivers."

I launched the client with all debugging enabled but didn't see much of interest, aside from this line:

0035:trace:font:GetTextExtentExPointW (0x5d0, L"The game encountered a fatal DirectX issue while attempting to start. Try a different screen resolution or bit depth. If that doesn't work, try new video drivers.", 340)

At this point my installed applications for this bottle are Asheron's Call, AC: Dark Majesty, AC: Throne of Destiny, AC Versions, and CrossOver HTML engine. I tried installing DirectX9 as well but that made no difference.

Also, FYI I had AC working fine on a Fedora 14 installation on this same computer using CrossOver 10.3 just last week, so maybe it's a driver issue?

Any ideas? I'm willing to help debug to get this working.

Hmm OK I think I got it working. I went into the wine configuration settings for the AC bottle and changed three things. I set it to emulate a virtual desktop, then I turned off vertex shader support and pixel shaders. I did all three of these things and the client launched without an error. I'll do some trial and error and which thing(s) caused it to work.

OK Quick update, I re-enabled pixel and vertex shading and the client still loads, so I'm guessing it requires the virtual desktop.

Also, at first the client wouldn't patch itself, it would just hang at Update Progress, but after canceling and retrying a couple times it seems to have started patching itself.

Alright, patching is done but now I get a Program Error that says "The program acclient.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." This happens just after it checks for patching and is about to load the Turbine logo.
