Archon:Classic

Was super-excited to pick this up, my brothers and I played it a ton on our Commodores, but it loads fine in Crossover, the game even plays fine, however, there are 2 problems. This is on my i7 iMac with 9.2.

First - There is no resolution selection. The way Crossover tells the game the available resolutions (as explained by Ken Thomasas in a previous post), it makes it impossible to be fully full-screen, the dock and menu will stay.

Second - The menu has music, plenty of it, but once you select your teams and start the game, the sound stops, and there is an error about Open AL. Bummer.

Hi,

Possibly you need 32bit openal dll files...I have
some around somewhere if you're interested in trying...

Cheers!

I'm trying to get Archon to work as well on my Mandriva linux operating system notebook, and there is no sound too after I pick the teams. Is there a solution to this... Thank You Very Much! I also played Archon on the commodore 64 when I was in middle school many years ago. However, without sound this game loses a lot of value.. Thank you =) (I'm running Archon on Steam -- the game download client).

Hi,

I remember this game now - I had it on my Amiga years ago =)
(many years ago ;)

I'll download the demo via Steam and see what I discover...

...oh!..could both posters here please mention what your
computer platform/OS{version}/videocard specs are?...

Cheers!

Update:

Okay, the demo does the same thing here (in linux) -- I tried changing to a different
openal32.dll but it didn't help any...I have sound up to the point of finishing my
first move, and then the openal error appears...I'll have to spend some time with
debug to see if I can ascertain why...(also want to check on the Mac ;)

Btw, I just submitted this app into the C4 database -- when it's approved I'll do
some more testing and report back to that page (gives me somewhere to tag a bug
against it)...

Cheers!

Wow! Thank you very much!! Very fast response time! Yes, I get the same error -- the openAL error. I wonder why it's doing that as well. All I know is that I'm on a Mandriva 32-bit operating system (linux =) ) and I'm too much of a linux newbie to figure out what video card is on my notebook computer. But yes, the same error you mentioned -- about the openAL error keeps coming up about the sound not being able to work. Thank You Very Much!! =) =)

Update 2:

Okay...got it working...you need to set openal32.dll to native,builtin ...

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\Archon.exe]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\Archon.exe\DllOverrides]
"openal32"="native,builtin"

Cheers!

edit: dewhitespace code

Thank You Very Much!! I got it working! I really appreciate the good work here! And this was solved like in one day. Hmm. I was initially puzzled by what "regedit4" meant, but I will post this portion of my written post here for those who are puzzled by what regedit means: that is, I just went into "manage bottles" ------> "advanced" -------> "Browse C: hard drive" --------> "Windows folder" ---------> and finally chose "Regedit.exe" (a DOS file). Even though this wasn't "Regedit4" but just only.. "Regedit" it worked A-Okay. After launching "Regedit.exe", I get to the regeditor. Now "Archon.exe" does not exist. So therefore create it by choosing in the menu ---------> "New -------------> Key". After Creating "Archon.exe" create "Dlloverrides" (I also think by choosing "New -----------> Key"? (I'm doing this partly by rote memory). Then do "New -----------> String" on the "Dlloverrides" section, and you get this new registry value. On that new registry value, rename it "openal32", then right-click on this new registry value and choose "modify". For "value name" you'll see "openal32" (which is greyed out and you can't edit it from this menu or position), but then you'll see "value data" which you can edit. set it equal to the following: "native, builtin". After making sure you created this new registry, exit the "Regedit application" and run Archon again. Then it will work!

Thank You Very Much for the solution! I really appreciate it! =) =) =) =) =) =) =)

Hi,

Great to hear you had a win! I was actually a bit rushed at the
time, and just quickly pasted the key here ... what I omitted to
type, was something like ....'copy and paste the following code into
a plaintext editor, and save the file as openal.reg and then start
regedit for the bottle in question, and use the 'import' function
to load the openal.reg file, exit regedit and you should be good
to go'....

...alternately, (and easier), is to start the Wine Configuration
for the bottle, click on the Libraries tab, and add/set openal32
to be native,builtin ....

In any event, after doing what you have, and then looking at this
retrospectively, I suppose you've a better understanding of how
things relate to each other <grin>

Cheers!

Update 3:

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=8375

Have at it - rank the app, submit screenshots, post a tip&trick about
the openal32 override....maybe a forum post...earn XP if you're an
advocate ;)

Cheers!

Thank you for the kind replies! Hmm. I don't know how to post on the apps section: for example, I can't fathom how to post a "tips and tricks" or if I should post this forum on the "forums section" of the app archon:classic. And I'm a beginner, just bought crossover like a couple of days ago -- I don't know much about linux or microsoft windows -- I just happened to figure out the part about the regedit.exe thingy. Uhm. I'm kind of lost here. When you say "Rank the app" do you mean like "I give it 5 out of 5 stars"? as in I love the game or I hate the game or something? In addition, I'm not sure how to add in a gold star to this game (I assume that means this game works beautifully for Crossover Games).

Thank You very much!

Hmm. I might not post in the apps section because I don't know what I'm doing -- not because I don't want to....
=)

You can post either (or both) a tip&trick and/or forum post about how
to get it to work, however I think you need to become an advocate for
the app to enter a tip&trick...(in the forum you don't)...

As for ranking, go to the app's page - look at the links along the
bottom of the page - one of them will be 'Submit Rank' and you can
click on that and give it a medal ranking - 'Silver' is a a safe bet,
but use your own discretion (I don't have the full game, so I've no
idea how well it truly works)...

...I will ask for this thread to be moved to the forum there later
anyhow. Don't be daunted or 'scared' about entering posts etc, as
you've 48hours to edit things until you're happy with them, and if
you do become advocate for the app, you can update/change the tips
& tricks section anytime as needed - don't worry, you can't break
or damage anything....best idea is to have a look at some other app
pages, and look at various tips&tricks and forum posts to get an
idea of how to go about things ;`)

Cheers!
