Anno 1800 starts, but crashes right after loading the game.

Hi, everyone!

I am very happy to see the progress that has been made on making this game work. I am still unable to play it, however, even though it is rated four stars. I have a 64-bit Windows 7 bottle with Ubisoft Connect installed, and have downloaded Anno 1800 into it:

  • Running the game without any advanced setting enabled gets me past the main menu and into the game itself, but crashes immediately after all assets are loaded.
  • If I enable D3DMetal or DXVK, I get a black screen on startup, and a crash several minutes later.
  • With ESync enabled, it takes an age and a half to get past the splash screen, saying "Synchronizing your Achievements with the cloud." Eventually the splash screen disappears, and the game launches, but then the black screen appears and is followed by a crash several minutes later.
  • With High Resolution Mode enabled, the same crash as without any advanced settings, after the game loads.

I love this game and would like to get it working. Since it has a four star rating, I assume someone got it working. Please, share your wisdom, so I (and others) can enjoy it as well. Thank you!

Hi there,

Does using Windows 10 work any better?

Best,
Meredith

Hi, Meredith!

Thank you for your assistance, and sorry about the delayed response. Below are the test results while launching from a newly created Windows 10 64-bit bottle, with everything re-downloaded anew:

  • First of all, Ubisoft Connect now has terrible graphical glitches and looks pixellated. Functionally, it seems to be intact.
  • Running Anno 1800 without any advanced setting enabled gets me past the main menu and into the game itself, but crashes immediately after all assets are loaded.
  • With D3DMetal enabled, the epileptic seizure warning screen appears, and is followed by a crash.
  • With DXVK enabled, first comes a black screen, then a grey screen, then the music starts, suggesting the game menu has been loaded. Moving the cursor over the place where menu items are produces the ticking sound, so the interface works, just that there is no image. If I minimize the application to Dock and then maximize it again, the grey screen quickly disappears, revealing the game underneath, but then reappears again, obscuring everything. Funny thing is, the game actually loads here and plays. I can see the cursor change, hear the interface clicking, and hear the different sound effects that results from me blindly placing commands through the grey screen.
  • ESync by itself results in the same crash as without advanced settings.
  • MSync by itself results in the same crash as without advanced settings.
  • High resolution by itself results in the same crash as without advanced settings.
  • High resolution + DXVK produce graphical glitches in the Ubisoft launcher and interface size does not seem to correlate with input fields. Once the game launches, the warning screen flashes between three different sizes: windowed, about quarter of the screen; full screen, and four times the screen size, so I see only the upper left quarter. Flashing is rather rapid, about 5 Hz. This flashing continues as the menu loads. Menu still works. I tried starting the game, and while waiting to align my cursor with the "continue" button, the seizure-like flashing stopped. Unfortunately, as I switched applications to Safari to update this post, the grey overlay re-appeared, obscuring everything. From here, the game runs as described in DXVK-only mode.
  • High resolution + D3DMetal launch the game in a window that is about quarter of the size of my screen. The mouse cursor is bound to this window, unless I switch to another application with CMD+Tab. Everything loads, and I am able to load up my save game. Once the game starts, only the peripheral menu items are visible (map, building controls, etc.), and they all work, but the game world itself is not there, instead the screen is covered by a single color tone, which changes slowly (as if averaging the contents it obscures) as I scroll around the map (I have a screenshot, please let me know if you want to see it).
  • High resolution + D3DMetal + Esync gives the same experience as without Esync. Funny enough, the cursor does not go all the way to the bottom of the window. When I clicked around blindly, I eventually get a Program Error, with the dialogue saying that it could be a deficiency with Wine.
  • High resolution + D3DMetal + Msync gives the same experience as without Msync.

Thank you very much for looking into this! Please let me know if testing any other combination of advanced settings makes sense. Happy holiday season!

Hi there,

Based on other ratings, I'd try enabling DirectX 12 mode in the game settings, and running with D3DMetal enabled in CrossOver.

Best,
Meredith

Hi

Did you manage to solve this?
I have the same issues on mac M1 Pro.

Regards

Apparently that was it. I cannot believe I didn't think to check the in-game settings. Thank you so much, Meredith!

So yes, Indium, it works for me now. I enabled D3DMetal in a 64-bit Windows 10 bottle, set Direct-X to 12 in the game's options, and set all graphics settings to High. Now the game runs. :D

Happy New Year, all! Cheers!

Hi,
I can confirm the game is running quite well with the aforementioned settings. However, I can't join any multiplayer games because I get "error LR05" every time. Have you tried multiplayer at all?
Since the game is rated five stars, I kind of expect every major feature to be working...

I have managed to run the game and it runs perfectly (m3 max) with Steam. However when I start building structures, selecting stuff to copy or even building fields, the game starts lagging and finally becomes too slow to be played. Until restart, then it works fine again.

Anyone have any experience with that?

Hi,
I can confirm that I'm facing the same issue: after ~30 minutes after the game launch it becoming more and more slowly and lagging. The restart helps, it becomes fast again and then slows after some time.

Any solution would be appreciated...

M3 Pro 14, 36 GB, the setting similar as above.

with release 24.0 Anno 1800 should run out of the box - but unfortunately this was only done for steam owned licenses, for directly Ubisoft bought Anno 1800 it is not usable.

I have tried it with my M1 Max - first try I had a total crash down of my MBP, never seen before with silicone chip at this Mac.
2nd try I got it running - but I have no mode browser available, why?
I have checked the Anno 1800 release number, it is the latest build - when I login at GFN with my Ubisoft account, I have the same release & the mod browser is working.

Please work on this game, that it is usable for everybody with Crossover - at the moment, not usable.

Thanks!

Seems to work better with the version 24. Did all nasty stuff on a huge late game and didn't get any slowdowns :) And I see it now uses more memory which was probably the problem before

I have the same problem. It's not starting up. It works fine using Whisky though but I haven't figured out how to support the higher resolution. I think the issue is within the Ubisoft app.
