Seems to be now working in CXO-9.0 -- someone check please

I just found this seems to be working properly now, but then I'm not
a -paying- amazon customer : that said, it seems to be registering
itself correctly now...caveat having to use the older (12/09) version.

-create a new winxp bottle
-install IE 7.0
-install the older kindle4pc package
-change the bottle type to win98
-adjust your DPI
-launch kindle4pc -- it wants to register again (first start), but after
that it seems to auto login/resync as it should.

Can someone with a bought book try things again please? (remember, you might
have to assign the book to the newly created kindle in your account)...

I was able to install it - during the install process it kicked off the application just fine and I was able to down load the apps. When I close the app - the install is recorded as having failed and I'm not able to re-run the kindle app.

I did create an win98 bottle first with IE 6 and then adjusted my dpi.

Hi,

Thanks for giving it a shot, however you will have to follow
the steps as I describe..ie; start with the winxp bottle, install
the deps and program itself (and it has to be the older dec/09
release of kindle4pc installer)...which may error out in the winxp
environment, but that's ok...then change the bottle to win98, fix
your DPI and restart kindle4pc. Technically speaking, the moment
you change the bottle to win98 guise, this breaks the IE 7 install.
I found instead, my system browser (firefox) intercepted the call
from the kindle4pc client, and opened a new window, logged me into
amazons correctly....reasonably civilized I thought. Note - I've
a suspicion this works as a result of breaking IE 7 ...

Cheers!

edit: doh!...if you need a copy of the dec/09 installer, let me know..

If the installer I got from you previously is the Dec 09 installer, I just verified it under Crossover 9.0 and it works as you indicated. I pulled a couple of my books on the first registration, I restarted and then downloaded another book without being forced to registration.

Good find Don!

Yep, the installer you pulled earlier is the Dec 09 version, thanks
for checking this out - good to here it holds true for you...I've
stuck the old installer up on rapidshare if anyone wants it;

http://rapidshare.com/files/358631421/KindleForPC-inst-1209.exe.gz.html

Now I'll have to start sniffing around why the newer installer won't work,
but like I said before, this was working a lot better in a real late model
wine, so it's probably future fodder - at least we have this much now ;)

And it's at least working whereas previously we were getting goofy problems with forced registrations and inability to grab books. I might try the latest installer over the weekend just for giggles too.

FYI, fiddled with the newer installer quickly and it crashes the app immediately using the same instructions you have that works just fine with the older installer. I'll play with it a little more when I get a chance.

Mmmh...just had a quick peek myself...needs at least visual c++ 2008..
...still looking for the rest.. ;)

edit: ok...looks like they're heading for webkit/.NET (wbem/wmi) stuffs
to do the new client

Anyone have a copy of the Dec 09 installer? The rapidshare link posted has exceeded its 10 download limit.

Hi there,

Sure, I just reloaded it to rapidshare...see;

Cheers!

Got the older version of the Kindle Reader to run in CXO Pro 9.0.1 amd64 in Ubuntu using Don's technique--on an Acer One netbook, no less! Thanks, Don!

The second download link doesn't work either now.

Hi,

I'm pretty much loath to putting up a permanent link to this file,
it is after all not my software to distribute -- but I doubt the folks
at Amazons are going to mind so much that I'm helping their service
out all told 8) Here's a new link for you ; Click Me!

As always, when the link expires/quotas and you find it dead,
just post here and I'll hoist it again.

Happy reading!

Don check the C4P file :D. It works perfectly in cx 9.1

If I install in my legacy win98 bottle (imported since cx 6.0) it opens firefox perfect when I click "Shop in Kindle Store". But in a new bottle it open Internet Explorer. In CrossOver prior 9.0 there was an option to change the default browser. Do you know how to do it in cx 9.1?

Regards,
Carlos

I was also able to install Kindle 1.1 with zero problems. I used the "tips & tricks" instructions, because I did not see the C4P link. I am used to the "good old days" (which really were not so good), when we did not have these one-click install options. IE6 and core fonts installed in a Win98 bottle. The latest version of Amazon Kindle installed without a problem.

I was able to install the current Kindle Reader fine with the C4P file, and it runs fine, but it doesn't seem to be saving settings. Every time I restart the app it wants to re-register itself, and then creates a new "device" associated with my Amazon account. Is there any workaround for this, or should I just try to track down the working beta version?

@Carlos, Alex S., Alex.... 8)

Apologies for taking time to get back here -- I more or less put off revisiting
this app, pending the next Crossover release, because I knew there were some
changes/improvements forthcoming with the core wine html engine (which may be
likely to change behavior with this app) -- it's definitely on my hit list though.
If anyone wants the 'old' installer that did work as expected, just let me know,
I still have it sitting around here somewhere....

Cheers!
