Kindle 1.17.1 (44183) (sort of) works with CrossOver Linux 15.3.1, needs some attention from the CodeWeavers staff

So, the latest version of Amazon Kindle for PC sort of works when using the latest CrossOver. I'll explain.

After a successful install, the application will open, but part of it will crash, resulting in this error. Installing Visual Studio 13's Visual C++ Redistributable does not seem to solve the problem.

Anyway, you can close this error box, and continue using the application, which ranges from 'it's working!' to 'Wat?' You see, there are some books which, when you attempt to download them, seem to take forever to transfer over...and even at 100%, they don't appear in your Downloaded Library area. Closing the app, and reopening it does not make these 100% downloaded but not officially counted books appear as part of your library, but instead makes it treat your book like an unsaved download (making all that progress disappear into the void); fun times. Oh, and it's not all books, just some of them -> in my case, one example is the "Compendium Maleficarum."

Test Platform: Linux Mint 18, Toshiba Satellite w/ i7, 16GB RAM, (and so on-in other words, all the fruit, or a typical developer's laptop)

Hello,

I just tested this Kindle version with CrossOver Linux 15.3.1 and I haven't seen any of these errors. I selected Amazon kindle in Install Windows Software and changed the installer for this version. It installed, activated, downloaded a book and everything ok. Is it possible for you to point me to a sample book it is failing? So I can test.

Tested in Ubuntu 16.04.1 64bits 4GB RAM

Hello, I am trying to use Kindle version 1.17.1 (44183) on CrossOver Linux 15.3.1. I got the same error as the one Ryan Ross mentioned, but there's another problem. I can't register the app (via Tools > Options > Registration menu). Whenever I try to register I got this error: "Registration failed. Please try again [99]" image.

Without registering, the app becomes useless since I can't view books I've purchased.

Does anyone have any solution?

Distro: Fedora 25 (Workstation Edition)

Hello,

This only happens with 1.17 and not 1.16?

Another thing, did you installed it via the crosstie?

Regards

Hello Raphael, it happens both with 1.17 and 1.16 (the "Registration failed. Please try again [99]" error).

But Ryan Ross' error only happens with 1.17.

I installed 1.17 with the .exe file downloaded from Amazon Kindle for PC's homepage.
I installed 1.16 with the .exe file downloaded automatically by CrossOver (in the Select Installer tab, choose the Download Installer option instead of Choose Installer File)

Regards

Hello Everyone,

The application finally works as expected after I switched from GNOME desktop environment to KDE. Some more details:

  • Originally I was using GNOME and CrossOver 15.3.1
  • Then I upgraded to CrossOver 16.0.0, the application still does not work
  • Then I switched to KDE
  • Uninstalled some GNOME applications that already have equivalent KDE version (not sure if this is needed or not, but this is what I did)
  • Now the application works. I can register the app & view my books.

Hope this helps.

The same Kindle for PC version works fine for me under CrossOver Linux 16.2.5 under Mint 18.2 Cinnamon - no crashes, registers fine, no problems with downloading or reading anything that I have tried.
The CrossOver team seem to have fixed whatever the problems were in the earlier version.
