Kindle won't download library

Using Crossover 11.0.3 to run Kindle for PC 1.9.3 on Xubuntu 12.04, I find that the Kindle application seems to install correctly. However, after I register using my e-mail and password, the device will not sync or download my library. The application seems to be registered; it is assigned a device number (ie, Ron's Kindle for PC 5) and shows up on the Kindle website as registered. IF I close the application and restart it, I'm prompted again for my e-mail and password. I find that I have the same problem on both my desktop and netbook computers. I get the same results even if I install via Crosstie If anyone has found a fix for this, I'd really be grateful if you would share it

TIA

Ron B.

This look like and issue that used to have Kindle with CrossOver 9 forcing us to install it in a win98 bottle. I have tested again a for me it works, so please run cxoffice/bin/cxdiag in order to check for missing libraries. And be sure you installed using the crosstie.

Tell us our results

I can't find ./.cxoffice/bin :

ron@xubuntu:/$ cd /home/ron/.cxoffice
ron@xubuntu:~/.cxoffice$ ls
Amazon Kindle for PC 1.x desktopdata tie
cxoffice.conf installers usage.log
ron@xubuntu:~/.cxoffice$

Without the dot my friend

cd /home/ron/cxoffice/bin

Still no library download using CrossTie/Win98 bottle. 8-(

Thanks but:

ron@xubuntu:~$ cd /home/ron/cxoffice/bin
bash: cd: /home/ron/cxoffice/bin: No such file or directory
ron@xubuntu:~$

Ok but if you are using CrossOver 11 use a winxp bottle. And waht was the output of cxdiag?

You installed crossover using root or a package. Try:

/opt/cxoffice/bin/cxdiag

Crossover 11 uses XP bottle by default. Can't find cxdiag.

OK!
ron@xubuntu:~$ /opt/cxoffice/bin/cxdiag

Have tried both Win98 and Winxp each with Crosstie. Same results.

OK,

You should install the JPEG library, but it won't resolve your issue. If you are behind a proxy you must configure it in the application in the Network section.

After that I don't know what problem is happening with your installation.

Thank you for trying. Am not behind proxy. I will install Jpeg library as suggested.

Ah, well I guess there is always the Kindle Cloud Reader.

Thanks again.

☹️ I am worried about that can be an issue with Kubuntu 12.04. When I have time I will try it in a virtual machine

Thank you.

Well confirmed. I have installed Ubuntu 12-04LTS and the same behaviour happens. So it is not your configuration, the problem is with this version of Ubuntu. I will try contact support team because I doubt that only happens with Kindle

...very likely pthread related iirc...

Yep, solved

I entered a support ticket and Andrew answered me about this problem with this link: http://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/linux/faq/ubuntu1204

I tested it and works perfectly, so I will copy it here:

Run the following command in terminal:

echo 0|sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope

and then try running Kindle again, library now should download right. If this works, you can make this change permanent by editing the ptrace conf file in sysctl:

sudo gedit /etc/sysctl.d/10-ptrace.conf

"gedit" can be replaced with your text editor of choice

and changing

kernel.yama.ptrace_scope = 1

to

kernel.yama.ptrace_scope = 0

That is test and tell us

I had this very problem on my 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 and it cleared it right up. Thanks!
