Won't Run on MacBookPro

The game won't run in my Mac Book Pro... if someone has found a way to do so, would be great.
After installing, I clic on the PLAY NOW button, I get some "Installing DirectX..." windows from Steam, and when it's supposed to load, nothing happens. Not even a crash report.

MacBook Pro
13-inch, Mid 2009
Processor 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
Software OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)

OK, apparently a small update has been released and the game is somehow playable! I have trouble with the launch screen, icons are not visible, but after some good ol' random clicking I managed to start playing. So far, I can tell you the game runs a bit sluggish, and seems like there's no way to play in complete, full screen (like I get my dock icons up every time I move the cursor down) but, so far, playable. Let's see how it goes...

Try using the experimental Mac driver. The option to enable it should be in the "Advanced" tab of your bottle. Also, try adding "-nostartup" as a command line parameter. This can be done from Steam (in the Properties menu of the game)

I'll try this, thanks!
After some hours of playtime, I can confirm the game runs pretty nice! The sluggish gameplay seems to come and go, but overall, twas a pretty solid experience. Have to try some online sessions though... maybe I could give it a Silver Medal, but I want to spend more time with it.

The problems with reduced "frames per second" are not happening just on wine. The Steam forums for this game are full of complaints from Windows users. The devs said they are trying to fix this.

I get a black screen when i open a new map (begin a standard game).
I can see the menus before though. And I can see the menus within the game, and the mini-map, but i cant se the map and my slaves and so on.
I have installed directx and microsoft visual C++ 6.0.

What do I do?

Add -nostartup to the game's command line. This can be done from Steam. Right-click on the game, go to properties and then click on the big button called SET LAUNCH OPTIONS

okay. But i'm not playing it through steam. - is there an alternative?

The alternative is to open Crossover, select the bottle where AoE is installed then click the Run Command button. Navigate to where AoE is installed, select the relevant exe file and add -nostartup. You can create a launcher if this works for you by clicking the Create Launcher button. Just for clairty's sake this is how the command line should look in the "run command box": "path_to_your_executable" -nostartup

Hmm I thought AoE 2 HD was a Steam exclusive title ;)

This worked for me. Thank you :P

Hello, Ive had a problem with opening Age of empires II. I successfully downloaded it and was able to play it well (without the disc, and anyway the disc wont work) as long as crossover was ok. It was fine until I had to reinstall crossover again. However, crossover's new version (12.5) seems to be incompatible with the file I have, even though they were updated. I always use the run command and unzip method to open AOE II, but this time instead of opening, the command would stop running, and nothing would happen. I tried reinstalling again, refreshing the bottles, creating new bottles (WinXP and Win98) and even transferring files to the application support folder without luck. I use a MacBook version 10.6.8 (dont know if snow leopard or something else). Please respond! And thanks in advance.

Hello, I have just Downloaded AoE2 Successfully using CrossOver, but whenever i try to play the game; an error box comes up saying "Please Insert the correct CD-ROM, select Okay and restart the application". Have any idea what i should do?

Hi All,

I have the same problem when I run the game on STEAM, the game does not start, even with the command -nostartup. (added since STEAM or "run a command " on crossover)

can you help me?

Since installing Yosemite and the update to Crossover (14.0.3) Age of Empires II HD won't open. When I try to open it through Steam it tries to install DirectX (I've installed DirecX9 via Crossover to see if I can get around this) and then nothing happens. No errors or anything just nothing.

I've got the -nostartup in the command line via Steam. Does anyone have any ideas what else I can try? I'm not even sure if I can find error logs anywhere that might be helpful.

Thanks!
