a more serious problem

I have a serious problem with photoshop elements. It starts up fine but the image
window does not open. There is no main window at all. The tool bar and layers windows open up separately on the desktop but the image window does not open no matter what I do. I've tried two different display managers KDE and WindowMaker with the same result.
Has anyone encountered a problem like this before?
