Looks like some people there know how to view debug errors at least. I can't tell if the posting from Retsiem is a crank or not (he says he got it working)--I've tried those steps with CXOffice and it doesn't change anything--haven't tried WineHQ Wine yet.

No offense intended. I just don't trust anything I can't confirm independently. You never know if someone's using DLLs off their Windows partition that are not available in Wine (i.e. you have to buy Windows anyway so what's the point?).
Glad to hear of your success. I hope to repeat it as soon as I have more time (which I thought I'd have had a while ago but I was wrong)
