fmres.dll

I did some poking around at fmres.dll. If you pull up the properties on a .dll in Windows 2k (and supposedly XP), it'll show you the versioning information. I tried this one several dlls, and the information is there. fmres.dll does not look like it has any versioning information embedded in the .dll. I do not know if it's encoded or if Windows is telling the truth.

Thus ends the theory, now the rampant speculation: I'm wondering if Wine is not properly handling the error condition for missing version information.

I mentioned the fmres.dll error message on the wine-devel mailing list. One of the coders produced a patch that is supposed to fix the problem. I havn't had time to try the patch yet; hopefully in the next day or two, there'll be a chance. Unfortunately, it didn't make the Wine-20040213 snapshot.

You can also patch Wine directly if you want to experiment:

Hopefully this will make the next Crossover Office release.

After applying the patch to Wine-20031212 (the latest one I was able to get IE installed on), I was able to get Framemaker 7.0 to start up and run. I am using a Demonstration License, but I was able to wake-up Framemaker and do basic document editing.

Procedure:

  1. Download Wine 20031212
  2. Apply patch to dlls/ntdll/virtual.c
  3. Compile & Install
  4. Use the IE 6 install script found here: http://bylands.dur.ac.uk/~mh/wine-ie/
  5. Install DCOM98.EXE - WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ole=n" wine dcom98.exe
  6. Install Framemaker 7.0

Good:

  • It recognizes all the local fonts
  • I was able to enter text, change fonts, and other basic operations

Bad:

  • There was an "Adobe Online internal error". I'm guessing that it won't contact the mothership to download updates right now.
  • When I open up the Help->About window, the program hung
  • I ran through several other dialog box creating menu items and it also hung

Codeweavers guys: This is a positive step - get this patch into CX Office

Hey Michael,

You want to sign up as an advocate for Framemaker? we would love to have you on board testing for us. We have done a little work on the app and would like to have an actually user testing it out for us.
