Our government here in British Columbia has required that users sign pdf documents filed in our land titles office with an Adobe signature.

See http://srmwww.gov.bc.ca/landtitle/EFS_web_site/index.htm

This means that the various LInux alternatives for creating pdf files are not sufficient. Getting Adobe to run in wine would be great. I will have to figure out how to pledge support for this as it is keeping us from switching to Linux here.

Try Scribus , its a very fine tool that can make publications and produce solid pdf files with a lot of features. www.scribus.net

scribus sucks.. we need acrobat to be supported.. it's ridiculous that it's not in version CXO 4

Scribus cannot import PDF files created with Adobe Acrobat 6.0 or higher (I've tried since I needed to be able to annotate PDF files created with Acrobat).

Our company uses Adobe Acrobat quite extensively for composing, annotating, editing and reading PDF files. Acrobat 6.0 and higher also allows one to include and play movies which we use quite extensively (Adobe Reader 7.0 for Linux does not include the required plugin to play movies that the Windows and Mac version has. A license for developing a plugin for Adobe Reader cost $1,000). Currently, most of these features are not available with any single or combination of software and/or tools for Linux.

I wouldn't mind pledging for this project but, based on what I read in this forum, it seems it won't be a priority. How much money would one have to pledge to bring the Acrobat 6.0 project to the front burner?

As an alternative, we've been considering hiring a programmer to add some of these features to XPDF. Please contact me if you are interested and are in serious need of running this type of software under Linux.
