Works A Lot Better In New Version

I did a fresh install of CrossOver Office Professional 3.0.0 and I have to say there is a big improvement since 2.1.0. I ran the management program and it asked me to register. I registered it as a previous installation. One problem here is that you cannot select a folder for data. if you select a file in your data folder then it will ask you if you want to overwrite and if you say yes. it selects the directory and registers the program properly. I went into the management module and added a class, teacher, student and enrolled a student. then i ran the student module and logged in as the student. If I tried to add a student or teacher in the previous version it would crash (2.1.0). Right now I haven't seen the program crash but the fonts are small and some of the images are displaced. I was using Accelerated Reader 5.12 and RedHat 9. I did notice that it takes a long time to come up to the login screen when you launch the management module

What happens if you install the Microsoft TrueType fonts?

I did a fresh install of CrossOver Office Standard 5.0.0 and was able to register (A.R.v6.3) as a previous intallation and adjust student/teacher info--after some tweaks. Fonts and images look just fine.

I couldn't browse the filesystem to get the data directory (had it grafted onto /usr/local/share/foo). So I grafted the data directory onto the equivalent point of the filesystem (as "/home/[$username]/.cxoffice/[$bottlename]/drive_c/alsdata/" ; the data directory was originally "c:\alsdata" ). Once I chown'ed the files & directories to match the user/group I'm running as, it worked just fine. Management components and "Data doctor" ran fine, allowed me to update student rosters, teachers, classes, etc. without a hitch.

I haven't been able to run the point-update yet; seems to keep looping to the "Oh my, we just need to do this update before you start, we've got everything we need right here... Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

More info to come, as I learn about the update process.

(replying to self)
Since my previous message, I've been able to get things working. I used the "Run a Windows Command" option to run first the Setup.exe file from the 6.35 patch-package, then the Update.exe (really small, really quick--you won't see it happen). Now AR runs just fine, under XO Office. In fact, for practical reasons, I made a tarball of the whole data directory, unpacked it on the Win98 machine (while running Knoppix), and (after running the updates on the Win98 machine), the administration, data-doctor, and student modules all ran just fine as well. Setting things up to serve the data to Win98 clients, via Samba, will be the next installment.
(goal for next 2 iterations: get sufficient network services running for Win9x machines to authenticate via SMB, and work from peer-hosted AR files; to be followed by getting same client machines to work from *nix/Samba-hosted AR files.)
Comments/questions welcomed. - Richard
