Full Steam ahead with 9.0 beta

Software guys are often accused of wanting to spend too much time polishing their beloved programs. I'm very guilty of that myself, and that's doubly hard because of our work on Wine. While Wine is amazing, it's not perfect, so there is a challenging balance in deciding that we've made enough progress to justify a release. Of course, if you let us software guys decide, we'll take forever and never ship anything.

Luckily for our gaming customers, Valve has forced our hand. That is, they have released an entirely rewritten version of Steam today. And, unfortunately, it does not work at all in our existing CrossOver Games releases. And since Steam is a large part of what our customers use CrossOver Games for, we've been forced to rush out a release to provide that support. We've been in a mad scramble this past month; Wine did not run the new GUI at all. We finally fixed it last week, just in time for the production launch by Valve.

So I am happy to announce that we're making a beta version of our CrossOver Games 9.0 release available today.  We're feeling pretty good about it; it runs the new Steam GUI, and quite a few games work very nicely. However, we really haven't had much time to test it or shake out any problems. So we really recommend it only for customers that need to use the new Steam GUI.

We hope to ship the 'real' 9.0 very quickly; if you're not using Steam, please give us a bit more time for that picky polish 😊.

Cheers,
Jeremy

Hi Jer,

Once again, impressive use of the word 'need'... ;)

Thanks for putting the needs of the many first here and once
again demonstrating a penchant for thinking 'outside the box'.

Cheers mate!

Thanks Jeremy! I play TF2 often and was surprised the other night when Steam wouldn't load. It took me a moment to realize that it was because of the Steam update. The only downside to using the Crossover Games 9 beta is that the gaming performance in TF2 has taken a big hit. I used to get about 50fps on my 27" iMac Core 2 Duo and now it feels like it's hitting maybe 15fps tops.

Working in the software field too, I realize that betas often lack the performance optimizations that a finished product have. Do you have a schedule for when the next increment of the beta will be available or when a final product will be? Gotta get my TF2 fix. LOL.

Thanks again guys! You've done a great job under the circumstances!

Hey Rick,

Thanks for the kind words. I do have good news; James Ramey, our VP sales,
is a big TF2 player, so good TF2 play is mandatory for us.

He was having some issues with beta4, which have now gone away in what
will be beta5. We're now figuring out whether that's from something
we did, or from a Valve update...

I'd guess that we'll have a next beta early next week, although we
want to make it possible to close Steam windows before the next one, and
that's still proving tricky.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Hi jeremy,
i have recently bought a copy of crossover games to play call of duty on my macbook which worked fine but it has stopped working due to the steam update ( i think ) and was wondering if i would have to buy crossover games 9.0 when it comes out. Also if u have any idea when it comes out that would be very helpful,
thanks,
bob.

recently bought? You don't need to rebuy it for 9.0 final. Go to 'My Account' and then on the left side to 'My Downloads', there you see all downloads available for your account. With 9.0beta4 (recent release) steam works again, but the performance in almost all games is very unstable and everything then fast...

hey jeremy

I use crossover games just for steam and play Tf2 a lot. I love the work you guys are doing for us gamers with macs. However, i downloaded the new beta and tf2 does not work at all. Steam is working fine but when i try to start the game for Tf2 it gives me a white screen for about 10 seconds and shuts down. I have tried re-downloading it numerous times and even tried the new beta on another mac which had the same result. Do you know what the reason for this problem might be? Please i am so desperate and i love Tf2 so much. Any advice would be helpful.
thank you
chris B

Hey Chris,

This is a bad place for tech support; better is to try the forums and/or get a ticket in.
We'll take a ticket against the beta - we should be able to get you back to TF2 joy - we're
able to play it here.

Cheers,

Jeremy

hi I recently got the 9.0 beta for my mac just so i can use steam. When the new steam update hit i was forced to upgrade to the new beta. However now my only game (tf2) on steam does not work. Steam works fine but when i try to open the game the screen goes white and after 10 seconds returns to the steam menu. I have tried to new beta on 2 different computers with the same result.
