Three game clients that work on macOS with CrossOver

CrossOver makes it easy to use many of your favorite game clients to run Windows games on macOS. In this post, we explain how to install and run Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher and Ubisoft Connect.

Steam

There are two ways to install Steam games through CrossOver. Many games work well if you install Steam through CrossOver then pick games to install into your Steam bottle. For games that require additional configuration, we also have game-specific profiles that will also install in a new bottle. We’ll go through both options in turn.

To install Steam, open CrossOver and click Install at the bottom of the left sidebar. Steam is featured as a Popular Application, so you can just click on its entry. There’s also a search bar on top where you can search for other applications.

After you select Steam, you can click Install on the top of the page. You can also make changes to the install options in the Details section below, but most of the time that’s not necessary.

You’ll see a series of Windows install prompts that you can click through. When you’re all done, you’ll have a new bottle with Steam installed. Double click the Steam launcher to log in, then use the Steam client to download and run games just like on Windows.

Many games that are available on Steam also have their own CrossTies that will install the game in Steam with extra configuration options. You can think of CrossTies like installation recipes: they contain all of the instructions needed to run an application through CrossOver. For example, our CrossTie for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition has fixes for audio issues with the game.

To install a game through Steam with its own CrossTie, search for and select the game on the Install tab. In the Details section, you’ll see that CrossOver will install the game via Steam. If there are other options for installing a game - such as a standalone installer - you’ll be prompted to choose before installing. CrossOver will install Steam, then you can launch Steam, log in, and install the game.

Rockstar Games Launcher

To install Rockstar Games Launcher, open CrossOver and click Install at the bottom of the left sidebar. Rockstar Games Launcher is featured as a Popular Application, so you can just click on its entry.

After you select Rockstar Games Launcher, you can click Install on the top of the page.

You’ll see a series of Windows install prompts that you can click through. When you’re all done, you’ll have a new bottle with Rockstar Games Launcher installed. Double click the Rockstar Games Launcher launcher to log in, then use Rockstar to download and run games just like on Windows. Grand Theft Auto V works great on CrossOver with Rockstar Games Launcher.

Ubisoft Connect

To install Ubisoft Connect, open CrossOver and click Install at the bottom of the left sidebar. Ubisoft Connect is featured as a Popular Application, so you can just click on its entry.

After you select Ubisoft Connect, you can click Install on the top of the page.

You’ll see a series of Windows install prompts that you can click through. When you’re all done, you’ll have a new bottle with Ubisoft Connect installed. Double click the Ubisoft Connect launcher to log in, then use the Ubisoft Connect client to download and run games just like on Windows. Trackmania works well with Ubisoft Connect on CrossOver.

Is your favorite game not working? It's possible that you'll find a solution by checking out our Compatibility Database
While we do our best to make sure games are working well out of the box for everyone, sometimes tweaks are needed to help a game run better.

There are a few different places you can look for information about how to improve your experience running a particular game with CrossOver. You can check out the comments that other users have left on their ratings, you can go to the Tips section, and you can search the forums. For example, Trackmania runs well on CrossOver after making a couple of adjustments to the in-game settings. Both the ratings and the Tips section in our database entry for the game give instructions on how to optimize the game for CrossOver.

Great article!!

Now I want one titled "The top 10 applications (or games) maintained by Better Testers that run great on CrossOver"

For the games from Epic Games Store use the Heroic Games Launcher app. It solves the DRM part and the rest of the game runs in the selected WINE or CrossOver bottle. EGS has a native client for macOS though, but e.g. from the 200 games, I got for free from Epic over time, only 20% offer to install on macOS officially.

So happy to have crossover for mac! But all I want is to play “Coral Island” 🥲 and other cozy games. Hopefully it will be compatible with crossover soon 😣

The fact that I install Anno 2070, through Ubi Connect, on an M1 Macbook with basically zero tinkering and have it run like butter is nothing short of a miracle. Y'all are straight up a bunch of wizards! Keep it up! :D

I just tried installing Uplay- it installs and work fine. However Trackmania doesnt function properly. I have tons of GFX glitches and missing objects. Anyone knows how to fix this?

Yes, Heroic works great with CrossOver too!

We're hoping this game will be working better with CrossOver 23 - we have some good things in flight for that release!

You just need to tweak a couple of the in-game settings to get this working well. Check out this tip.

I would like to point out that in the development version of wine 8.2 there has also been some progress on "Amazon Games" (which is currently not in wine's AppDB)

https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49266 - Amazon Games seems to install with corefonts running
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50984 - Pop Up no longer appearing and I have been able to play some games.

Looking all positive.

Please apply Ninja-Blessings if you can.

Have a good day,
Maik
