Possible problem running Telltale's games in Snow Leopard.

I installed Snow Leopard after installing CrossOver Games 8.0.0 and my games would not launch anymore.
Therefore, I did a clean install of CrossOver Games and deleted all my bottles (after backing them up, of course).
I followed the instructions that worked so well for me the first time (and that I posted in the tips/tricks section of most Telltale games) and installed Launch of the Screaming Narwhal (the first Tale of Monkey Island) in a brand new bottle (with IE6, of course).
When I try launching it, I get the following error message:
The program MonkeyIsland101.exe has encountered a serious problem...
... This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in Wine...
I haven't tried any of the other games (and I'm going out of town today, so it'll probably have to wait until tomorrow).
Any idea?

Same results here using IE 6 & 7 for the wallace&gromit series.....can get them going
using wine-1.0.1 + ies4linux but that's it for now (I have submitted a ticket on this stuff)

I have actually never managed to get Wallace & Gromit to work, but every other game played just fine for me in 7.2.2 and in 8.0.0 (including Betas) before Snow Leopard.
EDIT: Just tried Culture Shock, the first episode from the first season of Sam & Max and got the same problem.
EDIT #2: Same problem with Homestar Ruiner, the first Strong Bad game.
EDIT #3: Tried IE 7 instead of IE 6. It did not solve the problem.

Hmm, I can imagine two possible influences that changed with Snow Leopard, quartz-wm and the graphics drivers.

See if running the game in a virtual desktop window helps.

Try setting the useGLSL registry value (under [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]) to "enabled" or "disabled" to see if either helps. You may have to create the key and/or the string value.

Thank you for trying to help me.
First of all, I have always run the games in a virtual desktop window (you pretty much need to for TOMI or the keyboard won't work) and I set the virtual desktop this time as well, but it did not make any difference.
As far as the registry value, it does not exist. There is no such key as Direct3D in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\
I can't really be called a "specialist" of registry edition, but I created a Direct3D key, in which I created a useGLSL string, where I set the data first to enabled, then to disabled (no quotation marks needed, right?).
Neither made a difference.

Hmm. It sounds like you did the right thing in the registry. Bummer that it didn't help.

Are all of the games you listed Telltale games? Are any 3D games (not from Telltale) working for you on Snow Leopard?

And, out of desperation, have you tried without the virtual desktop?

All the games I listed are indeed Telltale games.
I don't have any other 3D game, but the problem with the Telltale games actually occurs before any 3D activity (in Telltale's games, there is a 2D launcher first and that's when it stops working for me).
The problem might be with the game's registration (which occurs the first time you start the launcher).
I remember reading (not sure where anymore) that some people had problems registering the game in newer Wine versions (1.1...), but that once they had registered the game in an older Wine version (1.0.something or other), they could get it to run just fine in the newer Wine.
So, it seems like the problem might lie in the game registration process...
Finally, I have tried without the virtual desktop and it's a no-go.

If you really need to run CrossOver Games 7.2.2 under Snow Leopard, you can try the hack described here: http://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/CXOffice7underSnow

If it is the one-time registration issue, then maybe that can get around it.

I did the Terminal part of the hack, but I'm not sure how to launch CrossOver Games from the command line...
My lack of "computer programming (and/or hacking)" savvy is playing against me.

That hack is a bit biased for mainline (non-Games) CrossOver. The command is a bit different for CrossOver Games. Here's the modified command:

VERSIONER_PERL_PREFER_32_BIT=yes /Applications/"CrossOver Games".app/Contents/MacOS/"CrossOver Games"

Sorry, I got a bit impatient.
I figured it out and actually managed to register/unlock and launch the game in 7.2.2
I shut down 7.2.2 and relaunched 8.0.0 and the game is working now!
Thank you!
19 more games to unlock!

New month, new Tales of Monkey Island chapter, new problem.
First, I tried installing Lair of Leviathan (the new chapter of TOMI) the regular way (create new bottle in 8.0.0 with IE6, then install Lair of the Leviathan in the same bottle).
I launched and unlocked it, but could go no further, as any attempt to launch the game after I unlocked it resulted in the error message mentioned previously (The program MonkeyIsland103.exe has encountered a serious problem... This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in Wine.).
Then, I tried the way that worked for me for the other games (create new bottle in 8.0.0 with IE6, then install Lair of the Leviathan in the same bottle; close 8.0.0 and start CrossOver Games 7.2.2 using the instructions you gave in a previous message and unlock the game in 7.2.2), but the launcher would not even start in 7.2.2 (the icon for the game would appear in the dock, then disappear after a few seconds).
I realized that the Apple update to Mac OSX 10.6.1 might have replaced the quartz-wm file and I decided to "re-thin" the quartz-fm file.
Now, when I start CrossOver Games, I get the following message:
"To complete the installation of CrossOver, please insert the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 that came with your Intel-based Mac.
In order for CrossOver to look and work its best, it uses a component called "quartz-wm" from Apple's X11 application. However, Apple's X11 has not been installed and quartz-wm is unavailable.
When you install Mac OS X Install Disc 1, Cross Over will copy quartz-wm to your computer.
This will not install Apple's X11 - CrossOver will just copy quartz-wm..."
At the end of the message, I get the option to quit CrossOver or to use it without quartz-wm.
While using it without quartz-wm appears to work for 8.0.0, it just crashes 7.2.2.
I then tried to re-install quartz, but after that, 7.2.2 would not even launch at all anymore.
I just get the following error message in the terminal:

That's when I decided to restore my computer to a previous Time Machine backup, but it did not help.
I'm thinking that (since it's the only thing that changed since my last Telltale game installation) the update to 10.6.1 is responsible and that restoring my computer to a pre-10.6.1 backup might help, but I hope that there might be a better solution (especially with two more games coming in the next two months, it's gonna get more annoying to go back to old backups).
Any idea? Thank you!

The same error (The program MonkeyIsland103.exe has encountered a serious problem... This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in Wine.) occurs in 10.5.8 in CrossOver 8.0.0 as well so I don't think it's just Snow Leopard that is causing it.

Problem solved thanks to pygy on the Telltale forums: http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12509
The D3DX9_41.dll file is not in the Lair of the Leviathan folder.
I copied it off the Siege of Spinner Cay folder and it works great now!

Yep, that was it!

Note: The episodes need to be installed in the same bottle for this to work. I first tried copying the file from one bottle to the other, but got the same error as before (this time after clicking Launch Game rather than right as the launcher came up).
