Today I bought the commercial version of the ChromeOS Crossover application.

I like some features, where I don't have to install the IE 8 component to get Scrivener to register, and that the installation (once I figured out how to get through it) was actually quick and easy. However, a major drawback is how unintuitive it can be, especially when it's someone new to the ChromeOS/Linux ecosphere (only just got my Pixelbook Go in July), and has used none of the computers produced by Apple.

Two HUGE problems I've come across in the past hour: when I try to run Scrivener, it just freezes and I have to force quit it when I click on "Open Project". Also, where the heck are my Scrivener files located (the exact path)? I can't locate the "downloads" folder where the beta told me to save everything.

Edit: It should NOT take two minutes for a click to respond, especially for "Uninstall [program]".

This is frustrating, so I hope someone can help me out. If this continues, I'll just re-install the beta and wait for an update.

Well, that was frustrating. No help file is available, as it leads to a dead link.

Turns out, if you're using Scrivener at least, you need to have your folders in the LINUX folder of your machine now. And you can't double-click/tap the icon to open the program; you have to open it through the "File" drop-down menu. I'm not overly concerned by these, they're minor and I can live with them.

BUT. There's a really weird bug that may induce an enraged lap-table flip, eventually; the text is "fractured" all over the app, as in the capital letter K looks like <, and other letters are missing pixels. And then, when I'm scrolling around or moving the mouse, the screen tears, and hides test until you mouse over or scroll to reveal it. This problem didn't exist in the beta; the only issue I had there was that the text was too small.

Is there a setting I'm missing to make it stop this, or is it one of those "wait for updates" things?

Thank you so much for testing out this new variation of our product. We really appreciate the detailed feedback -- we were able to reproduce the messed up text that you were seeing. We determined the cause of the difference between the old Beta and the new Linux on ChromeOS behavior. Unfortunately, it is due to a feature that is implemented on Android but not on the Linux version provided by ChromeOS -- scaling support for high DPI displays. This is a complex feature for us to implement; we are aware of the problem, but it will take quite some time for us to implement this feature.

In the meantime, there is some good news :) You can work around this problem by turning off high resolution mode for your Scrivner bottle. From CrossOver 20, right click on your Scrivener bottle and select Settings. From there, uncheck "High Resolution Mode".

We would appreciate it if you let us know whether or not this fixes the issue for you, and if you have any other new problems with Scrivener on our new ChromeOS product.

As a note: turning off high resolution mode is likely to fix other similar problems on ChromeOS :)

That helped immensely; I can read everything now. However, there's still an issue with scrolling every so often. I can have a wall of text that shows when I open Scrivener/leave it alone for a bit, yet when I mouse over it, it looks like I'm in Paint, the mouse causing parts of the text to refract/swirl onto itself. Or, half of the screen will scroll and the rest won't. It's not damaging my document or anything, it's just a psychedelic thing to see.

The work-around is to tap on the uppermost bar, above the menu (the grab bar? I have no idea what the technical term is); that seems to "refresh" the screen, and things go back to normal.

Today, when I went into "compile", the main screen decided to resize itself, without my clicking on the button to do so.

Fingers crossed that nothing bad happens with Scrivener during NaNoWriMo! Or that it won't be weird with CrossOver when they release the new Windows version (supposedly this year).

I should mention that I'm using a brand-new Pixelbook Go; I doubt it makes a difference, but sometimes machines cause quirks, rather than the OS/App.
