Crossover Office Linux - Support for Ubuntu Karmic?

When will you support Ubuntu Karmic?

Not until after it is officially released and we test CrossOver with it a little bit.

Are you having issues on Karmic? I recently upgraded one of my system that has CX Games installed on it and everything is still working fine :)

~Jeff

I'm Running Crossover Pro 8.0. It was working perfectly on Ubuntu & Kubuntu 9.04. I was running nearly 50 Windows applications successfully:-

http://www.garfnet.org.uk/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=67&Itemid=58

However I just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10. (the final release version released 2009-10-29). I'm sorry to say that none of my Windows applications work anymore.

Karmic is now the current version of Ubuntu. Since jaunty is not an LTS (long term support edition) I understand that support for Jaunty has ended. So users have to upgrade now. Will Codeweavers support Karmic now? Is there anything I can do to help?

best wishes, G.

I just upgraded to 9.10 also. I wonder how you performed the upgrade? I've found through several upgrades that with Crossover, it is better to make an archive copy of your bottle(s) (which you should do periodically anyway), upgrade to 9.10 (or a fresh install of 9.10), (re)install Crosssover, then import the bottle(s).

That is what I did with my upgrade and all of my major applications seem to be working ... I have nearly 50 items installed in my main bottle so I haven't tested them all, but the main ones (major one is MS Office 2007) are working as before.

Hope that helps...

Mark

Indeed, this above is the -safest- way to perform a distro upgrade - if it's still
possible to archive your bottles now after the upgrade (even though they may
not be currently working), then do that, uninstall existing crossover, reinstall
a fresh copy of crossover, then restore your archived bottles - this might dig
you out of trouble here...

Cheers!

Hi Mark, thanks for your thoughts.

Fortunately I do keep my bottle archives safe. However I never needed to reinstall them as part of an upgrade before. I been a happy Crossover user since Ubuntu 7.04!

Thing is though, I been doing some digging. Turns out I can run applications if I launch them from the a desktop icon or from the command line. They just won't launch from the menu. Even more weird, if I drag a menu item to the desktop, that works!

I tried the bottle "Configuration" button and rebuilt the menus. But none of my apps launch from the menu. I will try to reinstall one of the smaller bottles to see if that fixes it. But somehow I doubt it.

Best wishes, G.

Hi G.,

It's relatively easy to install if you have the bottles backed up. I would really encourage you to just reinstall crossover and reimport the bottles. I think you'll save yourself some pain .... just my $.02...

Good luck!!
Mark

@ Rob & Mark. Right, I think I'm edging closer to the cause.

Seems the latest KMenu does not like commands in quotes. Seriously!

For example the menu command Crossover creates in order to launch CorelDRAW is:-
"/home/garf/.cxoffice/Corel/desktopdata/cxmenu/StartMenu.c^5E3A^5Fwindows^5Fprofiles^5FAll^2BUsers^5FStart^2BMenu/Programs/CorelDRAW+9/CorelDRAW+9"

This does NOT work from the menu. But the exact command copied and pasted into the terminal and run works perfectly.

However, remove the quotes, from the menu command, thus:-
/home/garf/.cxoffice/Corel/desktopdata/cxmenu/StartMenu.c^5E3A^5Fwindows^5Fprofiles^5FAll^2BUsers^5FStart^2BMenu/Programs/CorelDRAW+9/CorelDRAW+9

And CorelDRAW launches from the KMenu perfectly?

So, chaps, is this a bug with KDE, Ubuntu or Crossover?

Best wishes, G

Further to my last.

I just logged out and logged back in using Gnome instead of KDE. Everything works perfectly under Gnome. And very very quick!

I will do as you guys suggest and try a fresh install c/w archived bottles on another machine tomorrow, out of curiosity. But I think my symptoms really do point to an issue with KDE. FWIW, seems this latest Ubuntu uses KDE4.3 whereas the old one used KDE4.2

As a matter of interest, what desktop are you guys using? And is your Ubuntu 32 or 64 bit?

Best wishes, G

Ahh! I'm a Gnome desktop user ... so perhaps this is specific to KDE, therefore, you may be right in that reinstalling may not make a difference .... I can't speak to KDE.

Again, good luck!

@mr.goose -- I see you're an advocate ; you might find the following thread
of interest (may be pertinent);

Thanks chaps.
@ Don - that's just what I was looking for.

I will post there and see if anyone else finds the same as I do.

Much appreciated.

Best wishes, G.

I'm having the same issue (apps run ok in Kubuntu 9.10 but not from the KDE menu), but I'm not an advocate, so would appreciate if you could report back here with any further developments on this issue, Thanks.

However, I just upgraded from Kubuntu 9.04 (jaunty) to 9.10 (karmic). (the final release version released 2009-10-29). Suddenly all my Windows apps stopped working. So I did some digging:-

Turns out I can run applications if I launch them from a desktop icon or from the command line. They just won't launch from the Kmenu. Even more weird, if I drag a menu item to the desktop, and click the resultant desktop icon, that works too!

Anyway, it seems the latest KMenu does not like commands in quotes. Seriously!

For example the menu command Crossover creates on my system in order to launch CorelDRAW is:-

"/home/garf/.cxoffice/Corel/desktopdata/cxmenu/StartMenu.c^5E3A^5F windows^5Fprofiles^5FAll^2BUsers^5FStart^2BMenu/Programs/CorelDRAW+9/CorelDRAW+9"

This does NOT work from the menu.

However, (and this is the interesting part) when I removed the quotes from around the menu command, thus:-

/home/garf/.cxoffice/Corel/desktopdata/cxmenu/StartMenu.c^5E3A^5Fwindow s^5Fprofiles^5FAll^2BUsers^5FStart^2BMenu/Programs/CorelDRAW+9/CorelDRAW+9

...the Windows app launched perfectly from the K Menu.

I'd be grateful if someone else would try this. BTW, to edit the KMenu, right click on the "K" and select "Menu Editor".

Best wishes, G.

You might want to check that out for yourself, and report back to this
thread if it works (or not) for you.

Cheers!

The KDE 4.3 menu issues sound familiar - I believe running the command (as root) at the following wiki article should enable your KDE menu items:

http://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/CXOfficeStartMenuItems

The upcoming Crossover 9.0 shouldn't have this problem.
