Soulstorm loader problem

When I go to install Soulstorm it never gets to the installer. It just stops cold then gives me the option to finish. That's it.

You need to use my tips and tricks or it wont work :S

Alex

Any Luck :?

I successfully installed Soulstorm (the version purchased from Direct2Drive), but can't get the application to run. Whenever I launch it, the icon appears in the dock for a few moments, then disappears.

I consulted Alex Kornitzer's Tips & Tricks page, which I have some questions about. DirectX 9 was included as part of this installer, but I lack the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package.

  1. I did a Google search and found different versions of this available for download. As a complete novice when it comes to these things, which version do I download? (This is the version that came at the top of the Google search results -- is this the right one?)

  2. Once I find and download the right version, how do I actually install it? I'm new to CrossOver, and so far this is only the second game I've installed (the other is the original Dawn of War), so I still don't quite understand how bottles work. Is there some way to install additional software into an already existing bottle? If so, how?

Soulstorm is probably my single favorite computer game ever, and am eager to get it working on my new iMac! So I appreciate any input or advice anybody can offer.

CrossOver comes with built-in knowledge about how to install various software. For many, it knows how to download them, too. That's the case for the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables. In CrossOver's Software Installer, look under Runtime Support Components.

Thanks for your quick reply. It's good to know that they've made installing these components as simple and straightforward as possible.

However, one thing that did confuse me. I've included a full account here of what I did, just for the benefit of anybody else who made the same mistake I did:

The first time I tried installing those components, I did it just from the menu using "Configure: Install Software..." which just made a new bottle with nothing but these components installed. Then, being the silly fool that I am, I tried to launch Soulstorm, and it still didn't open. So I realized I must have made an elementary mistake.

So I dug around a bit more, and figured out that I needed to install the components within the Soulstorm bottle. So I selected "Configure: Manage Bottles..." from the application menu, then selected the "Warhammer 40k_Dawn of War_Soulstorm" bottle then clicked the "Applications" tab on the right, then selected the "Install Software..." button at the bottom then installed the components that way. And now the Soulstorm application launches as it should!

Yup, that can be confusing. Thanks for sharing your insight with your fellow users.

Just so you know, even if you start from Configure > Install Software, you can pick the bottle to install into during that process. If you pick it before selecting the software package to install, your choice will stick. Or, if you pick the software package first, CrossOver will suggest a new bottle, but you can change that. (We are considering making CrossOver not suggest a new bottle for runtime support components. It would make you pick the desired bottle, which might result in fewer surprises.)
