Mic sounding Horrible

I've mentioned this in passing but I was wondering if Codeweavers are aware of the mic problem.
I have a nice XLR USB mic and have been reported to "Sound like I'm talking through a Fan". But if I record myself in Audacity it sounds perfectly fine. Please post any tips or offer some advice. I don't know if I'm missing something obvious. :)

I'm guessing you mean the native version of Audacity. You might test the Windows version of Audacity running under CrossOver. Also, the TF2 microphone test. What OS do you use?

Yes I did mean the native version of Audacity, and that is a great idea to try the windows version of it.

I use Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty

Ooh ooh Stephen thanks for reminding me of this mic issue..

Havent used my mic for qutie a while..its getting dusty..

Um..the last round i tried it , they said my voice was rather muffled too...:( static ..

I will try it with the windows version of audicty..

Hm.. i use arch linux ..

I was quite sure i set the mic controls to alsa only ...um.. in winecfg and system settings...is there anyway to get over this issue?

I got the same exact "fan" comments as well.. everyone just said stop talking because it's too annoying =/

So I tried the windows version of Audacity using CXGames and it sounds great! Just like it does using the native linux version so the problem must be TF2 or Steam.

Perhaps as it's a USB mic, it's being CPU starved when you run TF2 - perhaps try doing something that maxes out your CPU and then try the Windows Audacity again to test that?

Or Source. Do you have other multiplayer Source games with voice chat?

I completely forgot about this but it could've of saved us some time.

I play competitively and one way we get in touch with each other is Ventrilo, it works great and I have asked a couple of people and they say my mic sounds great (it being a XLR sorta helps) but it is not an USB mic getting starved for CPU cycles. It is definitively with TF2 or Steam.
