I just can't get a decent framerate.

Hey guys, I'm have a buttload of trouble maintaining even 30fps in TF2. I don't know why. I use all the recommended settings TF2 gives me and even if I drop the settings way below, I don't get much of an FPS gain at all when I'm in the middle of a firefight. The rate drops below 30 constantly.

Running Ubuntu 9.04, also using kernel 2.6.31-6. Latest nVidia drivers from their website. No trace of pulseaudio in my system, I turn off compiz when I'm playing.

No matter what I do, even giving the lowest graphics settings, I still can't get a good framerate! What am I missing?

Well, I think there was thread for Ubuntu users who got crappy FPSs, but I can't find it. :|

Oh, and what's your dxlevel and CrossOver Games version?
Dxlevel 8 is less complex but sometimes faster than 9. And you should be running CxG 8 (public release, not a beta or release candidate).

Yeah I'm using the latest CXgames. I didn't modify the dxlevel, I suppose I should try that? My only gripe with that is that I have to set the graphics levels in-game every time I launch it. Really annoying :\

Ok, good. Yes! Try "-dxlevel 81" for 8.1 and "-dxlevel 90" for 9.0. Open the properties of TF2 in Steam, open the launch options, and add either of those at the end. Try out both. (But don't use both at the same time! That won't work.)

Yeah, known issue, and it does suck. But you should be able to change size, resolution, and windowed mode in the launch options. You're using a Mac, I guess?

Christopher, your Geforce 9800M should run this game pretty nicely in dxlevel 95, even at higher resolutions(though perhaps not at the full 17" res). Are you sure that there aren't any other processes eating CPU time? Also try to disable 3D desktop effects for testing.
