Macbook Pro...?

Hey, me again. So, I'm trying the 8.0 trial now and for the first time steam tells me that my videocard is not supported and may not work with TF2 at all... This is the first time that's happened by the way.
Alright, so now its not crashing at all (Yay!)
BUT its REALLY slow. In other words my average fps is ONE.
So, should I upgrade to a macbook pro (current model)?
Because I've been reading some of the threads and apparently NVIDIA GeForce 9400M is still bad since they're "M" gcards don't work well either...
So, is this true?
Should I just upgrade my RAM? (Currently have 1 GB and apparently since CrossOver is "less efficient" it takes up 1.2 GB?)
Or, should I get a Pro?
Help.

Do you have one of these 'NVIDIA GeForce 9400M' cards, then?

I wouldn't worry too much about what Steam tells you, it's just parroting what it's been told - and that's not always reliable in these situations.

You seem to be on the low side for TF2, so you might want to try knocking down tghe graphical frippery and see if that speeds you up. You may want to try;

  1. open steam.

  2. right click on team fortress 2.

  3. choose properties.

  4. click on: set launch options.

  5. type: -dxlevel 81

  6. now type: -w xxxx -h xxx this sets the resolution because adding the -dxlevel sets the resolution to 800 x 600 automatic. ( x is a number for 1280 x 800 resolution type: -w 1280 -h 800)

Does that make it go faster?

Oh, no I have a GMA X3100.
In essence, I'm just wondering if I should upgrade to Pro because I was reading some threads here and some said "M" cards have problems as well...
Oh and also, I forgot the dxlevel thing so now its 8.
And now I'm getting around 10 to 30 fps... on a relatively empty server (only about 7 people)

Yeah, I've seen a Dell Inspiron with a GMA X3100 run TF2 in Windows Vista, and it didn't do a whole lot better than that, with all the options stripped right back down to the least possible.

I'll leave the Mac owners to suggest if you should upgrade or not, as I run Linux myself.

The Intel drivers on OSX suck, like they do on Windows and Linux. The cards themselves probably aren't that bad. They are much slower than geforce 9400m. The problem is that the OSX drivers for the intel cards have many bugs that lead to game crashes and even full system crashes.

As for performance: In a crowded server(20+ players), dxlevel 95, high settings, 640x480 I get 4-5 fps on my macbook with a X3100. If I increase the resolution to 1280x900 I am sure I'd be down to 1 fps.

Dxlevel 81 and lowest settings should work much better on this gpu.

Hmmm, I have a GeForce 8600M GT and CxG 8. Should I lower my dxlevel? I already use a smaller screen resolution, but most of my settings are high. :|
