I am running on Ubuntu 9.4 and I think with the new Steamworks update broke TF2 please respond ASAP!
Thanks for pointing out this problem .
Tf2 , after the latest steam update patch , would be stuck at loading screen ..funny thing is that when its stuck that hl2.exe has became a zombie proccess .....funny.. and after force closing tf2 , steam also becomes unresponsive.
NOTE : THis problem ALso occures in native windows install ..THere fore it is steam update causing the problem
I will be starting a thread bout this in the advocates forum
Thanks Scott :D
I'm using Crossover to run TF2 on OS X and I think the Steam update also broke mine. Whenever I load a server, the game crashes and I get an error message that reads: "Engine Error: failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX9::LockVertexBuffer"

What version of Crossover Games are you running? What version of OSX are you running? I am running Crossover Games 7.2.1 and OSX version 10.5.7 and currently do not have any issues running TF2. Please respond with your answers so it can be verified. Thanks.
Are you running in DX8 or DX9 mode? I'm also running CXG 7.2.1 under Mac OS X 10.5.7 with GLSL enabled and currently having no problems.
Also, have you tried verifying your game cache files? This can be done by opening the options window for TF2, going to the Local Files tab, and clicking Verify Game Cache.
Everyone who is having problems, please try the "Check for Steam updates" button in the Steam menu entry. Valve released another update very late in the evening yesterday that is supposed to fix some problems introduced by the earlier update. Maybe this fixes the problem.
We can reproduce the problem on some of our machines by the way, but most others work. Actually, the only machine that is broken has a Geforce 8600 GT...
(It seems odd though that Steam breaks on a specific graphics card)

Are you sure it's the graphics card that is causing the problem? The machine I was just playing on yesterday has a Geforce 8600m GT...

No, by no means sure. I would find it rather odd if it really was the cause. I just tested TF2 on a Nvidia GT 120 here. Works fine. That GT 120 has a lot of power it seems 😊
T,T i need a new computer soon and fast...mines sooo underpowered
oh ya .. is there really an update? my steam still reports that it is in the latest version T.T

I'm running Crossover 7.2.1, OS 10.5.7 on a unibody Macbook Pro with a 9600M GT. I've never had this problem in my 6+ months of playing TF2 on my mac. When the Steam update came out, I was initially still able to get onto servers, but the game was persistently crashing while in-game. I created a new bottle and installed Steam fresh onto it and downloaded TF2 and since then, I haven't been able to get into games at all. I have the latest version of the Steam client.

There have been 2 steam updates since this problem started and it's still not working. It's stuck at the loading screen before the menu shows up. I have to terminate all .exe processes for everything to close; the "reboot bottle" feature isn't working. My system is a ThinkPad T61p laptop with a Quadro FX 570M GPU running 32-bit Arch Linux (rolling release). I tried running it from the console and here's the output:
CellID: Fetching server list from CSDS. . .
CellID: CSDS returned 173 servers.
CellID: Connecting to 69.28.145.82:27031. . .
CellID: Connect to 69.28.145.82:27031 took 73 MS

wineserver crashed, please enable coredumps (ulimit -c unlimited) and restart.
I then ran "ulimit -c unlimited" and tried again, getting the same console output, except for different IP addresses and connection times and the last line being missing. I'm assuming it saved a core dump somewhere, but I don't know where and these forums seem not to allow attachments anyway.
Edit: This was my first post, so I thought this would appear at the end of the thread, like most forums with un-nested appearance. Originally, I was going to reply to > (quote:311445)
I'm running Crossover 7.2.1
, asking where they got 7.2.1, since the highest version I could see to download was 7.2.0, but then I figured there must have been some Mac-specific problem with the first 7.2 release, so I decided it wasn't worth asking after all. I think a comment preview feature would be nice, instead of having to edit after the fact.
My copy of TF2 has started crashing in-game about every few minutes. Until a few days ago, it was completely stable.

I can confirm that my TF2 locks up at the menu on Ubuntu 9.04.
My laptop has a Nvidia Geforce 9200 (180.44).
I'll test out on my Desktop as well.
Crashing like crazy (within 3 minutes of starting game play) on a Mac Pro /w 7300 GT and Macbook w/ 9400M. They both were workable (play an hour or so without crash) within the past few days. Both machines are totally up to date on everything except iTunes (which I usually lag a release or so behind on). I play exclusively on pl_badwater maps.
Yep this is where I'm at too Hat, even with a wineserver upgrade. So just hold out for the valve and CXG updates. :)
TF2 and CS:S are quitting with the same error; "Engine Error: failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8: LockVertexBuffer," whenever I join a server. I'm using Crossover Games 7.2.0 on OS X Leopard (10.5.7)
We've just released CrossOver Games 7.2.2 which should hopefully fix the problems introduced by this update. Its a silent release for now(released late in the day), so no release notification fanfare.
I'm interested to hear how it works for you.
Just installed 7.2.2. It crashed while updating my bottles.
But since then it has been flawless for 45 minutes so far in TF2.
Thanks!

The TF2 part is nice to hear. I'm always glad to hear that the fixes work.
The bottle update strikes me as odd, because there's no change in the bottles in that update. I guess I'll ignore it for now and see if there are more reports of that problem.
Hi, I recently downloaded crossover and steam in an attempt to play TF2. SO far, I've been unable to get in; everytime tf2 is loading the server it crashes and i get the Engine Error: failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8: LockVertexBuffer, error. I have Crossover 8.0.1, running OSX 10.5.8 on a new macbook pro.
CrossOver 8 or CrossOver Games 8 Beta? You should be using CrossOver Games.
Um...its the demo atm, so I'm not sure. FAr as I know its not beta.
Demo of what? CrossOver or CrossOver games? Does the icon of the program have small bullet holes in it?
Prolly not going to help anyone, but I wanted to post my fix here with the hopes it might help another. With my configuration with Ubuntu 9.04 I needed set the following switches
-sw -novid -dxlevel 90 -width 1024 -height 768 -heapsize 512000
I believe that it is because of my video cards not being fully supported under ubuntu 9.04 and the fact that I run a dual screen setup as well. But as soon as I added the size of the window and the open in window switch game runs perfectly.
I was also able to make it run with a driectx level of 81 instead of 90. Hope this helps someone.
