In order to play TF2 without slowdown, I need to turn shader detail to low. However every time I start up TF2, it gets reset back to high and I have to manually change it back again. Audio settings are saved between program runs, so I thought maybe the fact that video settings weren't was a bug. Is there a way to change the default to low, or a command line option to set it as low?
I'm experiencing the same issue, Brian. Another setting I noticed that doesn't seem to persist is disabling voice chat.
The cvar for shader detail is:
mat_reducefillrate 0 - High
mat_reducefillrate 1 - Low
You can should be able to put this in your config.cfg (or make an autoexec.cfg in the same directory) file in the directory program files/steam/steamapps/yourid/tf2/tf/cfg

Check your command-line options for the game. If you have -dxlevel in there, then that resets your video settings by design. The game remembers the last -dxlevel used, so you don't have to keep the option there after you've run the game with it once.
