TF2 wont start - Minimum Requirement Directx 8.0

I have tried to follow the posts in this forum but TF2 will not start for me. I have tried to set the steam launch options to -novid -window -dxlevel 80 but it apparently just ignores them and wont start. Always pops up a window saying that the minimum requirement is directx 8.0 or above.

I have managed to get Half-Life 2 working but not TF2. It just won't start. I have a nvidia FX5200 adapter and running FC6. I am on the latest 6.2 of crossover. As far as I can tell my system is set up for 3d accelerated graphics.

You might try "-dxlevel 81".

However, I suspect what's actually happening is that your video card and/or video driver simply don't have the OpenGL capabilities which Wine needs to emulate DirectX 8. The specific capabilities of various cards and drivers is outside of my area of expertise. Stefan might know. He'd also know which OpenGL capabilities would be needed to emulate dx8.

Tried dxlevel81 and it still wont start. I've tried installing and reinstalling in a new bottle as well. Just to confirm it can run on my machine i booted into windows and was able to run it just fine. so i guess there is something about the driver settings causing it not to run. i also noticed that HL2 is unbearably slow. i would think that a Geforce 5200FX and AMD64 2.5GHz machine would be sufficient but I guess not.

Hi salcido.

It is your videocard that doesn't support it.
For Ideal gaming (everything full - Team Fortress 2)
CPU: 3.4 GHz Processor
RAM: 1024 MB
Graphics Card: Radeon X800 or Geforce 6800

Notice that your Processor is a dual core so fast enough.
Sorry to tell but I should advise you to buy another Videocard.
Then again Nvidia website sais the following:
The only DirectX 9 compatible GPUs in their class, the GeForce FX 5200 and GeForce PCX 5300 models are engineered for compatibility with the latest gaming and multimedia software.
It could run but far from smooth I think.

I booted into Windows on the same machine and I can run TF2 just fine with no speed problems. So I guess that the overhead of running under wine makes it too much and it can't keep up. But it is surprising that I can't launch TF2 at all. It seems others got it to install just fine but off the orange box install on a new windows 2000 bottle it just complains about requiring directx 8 no matter what dxlevel switch i use.
