found out why turning shadows on causes crash a few minutes into game.

i reported earlier that if i set offscreenrenderingmode to fbo in registry, and turned shadows on in tf2 (medium), it would crash if there were a couple ppl playing. also that the death screen + screenscaps would be upside down. this was with dxlevel 81

today i decided to set it to dxlevel 80. set OSRM to fbo, turned shadows on... no crashes; nice :D however death screens still upside down.

offscreenrenderingmode set to fbo seems to have nothing to do with the crash, but rather dxlevel higher than 80, so i'll leave that out for now below (but as mentioned, it does cause the vert axis messup i believe)

dxlevel 81:

  • crashes very easily
  • does not show shadows for character's weapon
  • the shadows have a kind of blurry/soft/antialiased look to them

dxlevel 80:

  • no crashes :D
  • shows character weapon shadow :)
  • shadows don't have the blurred look to them, instead a sharper look

any ideas, and would it be easily fixed? (dxlevel 81 with shadows on medium)

thanks!

Hi,
I think the sharp vs blurred shadows are a property of dxlevel 80 vs 81. I think the upside down rendering issue is a MacOS driver bug(in fbo_blit most likely), maybe related to the complete breakage of the death screen for some users

and the crash in dxlevel 81 (with medium shadows) vs no crash in dxlevel 80 (with medium shadows?)

thanks again!

That one is hard to answer, it needs debugging. Could be due to a difference how HL2 draws the shadows
