I'm having issues getting TF2 to work properly. If I don't have the novid setting it the game will crash as soon as the intro video finishes. If I do have the setting then TF2 won't start. I have tried this on both Gutsy and Hardy (Ubuntu). I have tried it with both an HD2600 XT and X300 SE, same results on both cards. I have the latest Catalyst driver (8.3) installed. If I try the onboard nVidia chipset then I can launch the game, but it runs poorly as expected. I have tried dxlevel 80 and dxlevel 81. I have also disabled the in-game Steam community overlay.

If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

It is a known fact that -novid is needed to prevent crashing. I don't know what else I can help you with. It might be worth opening a support ticket for your issue, as your problem may have already been solved.

-novid is strictly needed on MacOS only, but some older X server versions on Linux play the videos terribly slow, so we deactivated them there as well.

As for your issue, the Linux ATI driver is always a bit tricky, but I tested the games and they're working for me on my radeon X1600, but we didn't do much stability testing with different hardware.
