TF2 Runs Great but Crashes Frequently

Team Fortress is looking better than ever, but is plagued by frequent crashes on my computer. I've noticed that this seems to happen on more populated servers, because I've been involved in games with less than 3 or 4 people and have had no crashes, but any more than that and I can't go longer than 5-10 minutes without the game crashing. Most of the time the game will freeze up and I'll have to force-quit out, but sometimes I will get a error message:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!

Program: C:\program...

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way."

I am impressed by the progress you guys have made but I can't make it through a single match on a populated server so I fear that I have to resort to Boot Camp again.

CrossOver Games 7.1.0

NVidia GeForce 8800 GT, 512 VRAM

What Video settings are you using in the game?

I'm running full screen resolution: 2560 x 1600

Advanced Settings:
Model detail: High
Texture detail: High
Shader detail: High
Water detail: Reflect all
Shadow detail: Medium
Antialiasing mode: None
Filtering mode: Arisotropic 8x
Wait for vertical sync: Disabled
High Dynamic Range: None
'bloom' effect: Disabled
Hardware DirectX level: DirectX v8.1
Software DirectX level: DirectX v9.0

You should definitely experiment with some lower settings. I realize that that makes it look worse, but it may help the stability problem. Also, if you can identify what particular setting(s) have an impact on stability, that will help narrow down the possible causes. That will help us find and fix the problems, hopefully.

At a guess, I would recommend turning Shader detail to Low as a first attempt.

On my setup I've found that Water Detail: Reflect all causes my game to crash, try knocking that back.
I also run shadow detail low, which helps my game stability.
I'm running Linux, so you might need to play around.

I pushed back both the Water Detail and Shadow Detail and though my crashes seem to be a bit less frequent, they are still happening enough that it makes it tough to make it through an entire match.

I've been experimenting with the video settings quite a bit, taking them all the way down to the lowest level. And though it seems that the freezing/crashing happens left often the lower the settings, I'm still crashing. It seems the more important variable causing the problem is the amount of players on screen, or at least on the server. I'm not sure if maybe I'm doing something wrong here.

Any ideas?

Ya I get these problems with many source games and a fix hasn't come around.
