CX Games 7.2 and TF2

I've got the following:

Intel 3.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo
Nvidia 9600GT (180.51)
4GB RAM
Ubuntu 9.04 x86_64 2.6.28-11-generic

I've got a clean install of CX Games 7.2 and Steam.
TF2 crashes at different places back to the Steam GUI. On occasion it's at the character select screen (pick a scout, heavy etc), other times it crashes during the loading screen.

I've tried setting dxlevel to 80, 81 and not dxlevel in the launch options. Still crashing back to Steam.
Tried disabling Compiz with a sudo metacity --replace ... Still crashes.
Changed all the settings to low in Video Settings.... no help.

Any ideas?

I'd love to blame my setup, but Cedega is working fine.

It's because of Pulseaudio and Wine and Alsa. You have to somehow disable pulseaudio or use OSS or EsounD.

Ah ok. I thought it was a graphics problem.

I've got a Sound Blaster Live 24-Bit which has external speakers connected to it and the Onboard Intel HDA sounds, which has my headset.
Normally regardless what I set in the Ubuntu Sound settings or Winecfg, the sound comes out of the Sound Blaster Live :p

In the bottle configuration under bottle settings, the "sound driver load order" was set to Auto.
Looking at the winecfg audio tab for the bottle, I had a whole load of sound devices, Jack, Alsa, OSS, NAS.....

When I switched the "sound drive load order" to Alsa, the winecfg audio tab came up with a different list, just ALSA and OSS.

I'll fiddle around and see what I can come up with.

Well, after nuking / purging pulse audio the crashes stopped.

Everything is now set to use ALSA. As Ubuntu is set to use my headset as default, TF2 sounds now use my headset.
Another really awesome thing is my microphone is now working in the game... hell yeah!

I am also on Ubuntu 9.04 with a Core i7 and GeForce 8800 GT.

I can get Counter-Strike:Source, TF2, and other Steam games to load, but when I try to create a game or join a server it just crashes. In TF2 sometimes it crashes in the character select screen as well.

Can you elaborate on how you "nuked" pulseaudio? My sound is working fine and so I'm confused how a sound issue could be causing the game to crash if it seems to be working right.

Nice com you got btw T.T..My com is on the boderline of usable.lol

Oh ya btw . Your problem could be either the MOTD rendering crash or the Pulseaudio problem..if not you could run a debug and see whats gone wrong .

run a debug by :

~/cxgames/bin/wine --verbose --debugmsg=+seh --cx-log notepad-(memorablename).log --cx-app NameOfProgram.exe

Of course, when it comes time to show off your log file, it would be nice if you didn't post it here and maybe instead sent in a support ticket (or emailed info@codeweavers.com) and attached the log file. This would ensure that nothing got lost from the cut and paste & keep the forums cleaner.

If/when you submit a ticket, please include a link to this forum thread!

Lol

Ya..So ..if it is motd rendering , install Internet explorer 6 to that bottle and see if it works

If its pulse audio , the easiet way to nuke pulseaudio is sudo aptitude purge pulseaudio

ya than set your sounds to ALsA or OSS...
GIve it a try =)

All the best!

Yep, I found my sound was working fine as well. Hence my thinking the issue was graphics card or something.
However, seems that CXGames (Wine) doesn't like pulse audio.

Remove pulseaudio by running:
sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio

After that reboot.
There after everything came good. Played for about an hour without any crashes.

I added something under tips and tricks explaining it: http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=3379;tips=1
Look under TF2 crashes, Pulse Audio and Ubuntu 9.04.

Good to see your game running =)

Thanks for adding the tips =)
