TF2 crashes - doesn't even load

Hi,
Running TF2 with latest Crossover in Linux (Kubuntu 8.11 - latest stable release iirc) - basically have the standard launch options, tried dx 80, and -windowed. But to no avail, although dx80 managed to get me to the screen where I can join but it must have been in a 600X something resolution as I couldn't read any of it... So removing dx80 thingy and I get a full crash and have to login.

I think it could be the KDE desktop environment that's causing the crashes and I hope it isn't as I downloaded TF2 and it's gone against my quota rather than downloading from my ISP's servers unfortunately, so downloading it again will take a nice chunk of my quota and I wont be a happy chappy :(. So I was wondering does the backup option work?

Anyway if there's a possible fix I'd appreciate it.

Specs:
OS: Kubuntu AMD64
Video Card: Nvidia 9800GTX (512MB RAM)
Mobo: Asus P5KR
CPU: Q9300
RAM: 4GB

All stock, no OCing etc.

Thanks in advance.

What is your window manager in KDE I'm not familiar with the defaults because I run gnome, but if it is "Compiz" some people have expierenced problems in gnome the best solution is to use "MetaCity". Hope this will help. :)

I'm not sure what it was, uninstalling Kubuntu and going to a normal Gnome desktop seemed to have done the trick.

Using Mint now with MetaCity window manager as mentioned, anywho, having fun playing now 😊

Thanks for your help mate :)

Something that is decidedly non-obvious in the Kubuntu environment is that "desktop effects" makes use of 3d hardware acceleration, mostly for compositing, and that plays very poorly with any standalone 3d application.

In all probability, that was the source of your trouble, but if you're happy with Gnome, then be happy. XD

Just a side note here.
What version of the Nvidia drivers were you running?

I've got a 9600GT and the support for the 9000 series cards in the Nvidia Linux drivers prior to about 178.80 was shocking. When I say shocking the cards didn't actually work at all.
Ubuntu (and Kubuntu I assume) use the 177 Nvidia Drivers in the restricted drivers. So if you use the restricted drivers package in Ubuntu / Kubuntu, you are probably going to get all sorts of strange problems. I'm currently running 180.29 and have no issues.

If you have a 9000 series or greater card, don't use the restricted drivers in Ubuntu, download the Nvidia Binary Drivers from their site and install them. It's not that difficult.
